Default Spring maintenance day v1.0: Caliper rebuild and filters

Temps hit mid- to upper-50s in Tha' Lou today so I got some quality time with the Silver Car. I had planned to do the VANOS but got a bit of a late start and didn't want to tear into it if I didn't have time to finish, so instead I did a few little maintenance items.

Ultimately it was fun and productive, but there were a couple rough patches as well...

1. Caliper rebuild

I started with rebuilding an old front caliper I had down the basement. I bought a seal kit for it a couple years ago when it was sticking, but decided it would be quicker and easier to just buy a reman and install it. Anyway, I figured I'd rebuild this one and put it on a for sale forum. Holy hell, not so easy as I thought. I could not get the dust boot to pop out around the piston to save my life, and ended up busting it. I was using 40psi at the tank(instructions say 3 bar, which is a little more than 40), but it just wouldn't pop over. Pisser. To be continued.

2. Air filter and MAF

The PO put a K+N panel filter in the ///M. I keep meaning to replace it, but haven't. I had about one use left on an old K+N recharge kit from my Jeep, so now that the cleaner and oil are pretty much used up, I imagine this will be the filter's last season in the car-- then it's back to paper...

3. Fuel filter

Again, holy hell. I cannot believe how hard it is to reinstall that clamp that holds the filter against the underside of the car.

4. Oil and filter

Don't think I need to elaborate on this.

And I know it sounds crazy, but I swear the seat-of-the-pants dyno registered a little boost in power after all this. It seems unlikely, unless the MAF was absolutely filthy or the fuel filter was clogging (it's been about a year and a half/15k miles since I've done them), but even if it's just my imagination, I'll take it.

Weather.com is showing possible showers for most of the day tomorrow, and I work outside on the driveway at my dad's (gotta get a place with a garage ), so I have to decide what I want to do about the VANOS. I'd like to get it done, but I also don't want to get it torn down and then be standing around in the rain. Decisions...
