Default vanos - threat or menace?

I am curios how many miles a person can reasonably expect an E46 M3 to go without a vanos failure.

I know a precise answer is not available, but it would be interesting to hear from both people who have had a failure and people with high miles cars who have not.

its so random you can't pin point when it will fail. There is a thread with posted failures with the mileage and the year of the car.

We had one member had his 2nd exhaust hub tab break within 12k miles. There have been members that had both tabs broken.

I found mine exhaust hub tab broken at around 75k miles. I put over 50k miles on my 2nd exhaust hub, it was fine when I checked it at 30k miles. I will check it again fairly shortly.

Just inspect it yourself. There's no other way to tell.

There is no formula to predict if or when.

Thanks, I will look for the thread. How big a deal (time/effort) is it to check? I assume that what you look for is the condition of the infamous tabs that break off and get chewed up by the cam drive chain? Or...?

all you need to do is remove the valve cover to inspect if both tabs are still intact.

Do we still have zerotosixty's M3F bingo card?

That would be perfect for this situation.

Yes there is. People need to learn and look deeper into why these vanos units are failing all the time. The reason is the OIL. CASTROL OIL is absolutely garbage oil. Friend of mine, his M3 has a lot more mileage than mine as he drives his year around. bought his in 2005 and in 30 000kms he had both tabs break. got himself new vanos unit and as I instructed to him at that time to not run Castrol oil. Him and I have been running Liquid Moly oil and he is at 160 000kms now on his M3 with not a single vanos problem. Castrol oil is crap. it is recommended by BMW because they are partner ship with Castrol. The additive you are looking for that your oil needs to have that makes this TWS soooo special is Zinc Phosphorous. Once TOTAL makes a 10w-60 for these cars I will be switching to that. But for now I will be running Lquid Moly.
