Default Thinking about SMG, what am in in for?

So after a very tiring search of 6 MT I am just about giving up and have started to look at SMG cars. I have found a few around 70k miles and they have not had any work/problems on the tranny.
A few questions-
I am guessing like a 6 spd the PPI wont really be able to determine much.
With the 6 spd I was figuring to have $2-3k put aside for new clutch. What sort of budget am i looking for in a SMG car?

Any other advise is very welcome!
Thanks
Chris

Read the stickies at the top of the forum on buying/owning an M3 and for SMG. New pump is usually the worst repair, I'd say average $2500 at an Indy mechanic if the pump goes.

Most have no problems. There is a small chance around 80k miles for a pump failure. Good news is your clutch will last until 120-140k miles, and the pump repair costs the same as a new clutch which most manual owners need before then...

This is most likely the most objective write up on SMG II out there.

My thoughts
If you track or drive in traffic, or just want something cool and different SMG is for you.

If the car is a weekend curvy road bomber you might want the manual.

Side notes... If you have never driven a stick, the SMG will take getting used to and is a horrible automatic. If you are used to the stick, SMG will take getting used too... Most drivers get into the grove on week 2, and fully comfortable by week 4. Which is also about the time you start exploring the power of the car, and will start scaring your self silly

I disagree with all who say SMG is a horrible automatic; their expectations aren't really in line with MOST automatic drivers. I completely agree that I don't like using auto mode, don't like the shift points, yada yada, so once I put down the coffee I usually shift myself out of auto mode. My point is this:
If you drive it brainlessly like MOST folks who drive automatics, it does fine; other than rolling at a stop most non-enthusiasts wouldn't know it from any other auto trans. If you think about it or listen to the shifts, etc, it will drive you crazy, and like most of us, shortly come out of auto mode.

I agree in some ways but I think the reason why it makes a horrible automatic is because its not as great as the convectional automatic (I'm talking comfort wise) On a convectional automatic you barley feel the shifts and you don't roll back on hills. The gear selection is always ready and dosnt take a second to get it into place. The SMG is fine in auto mode but as for the comfort aspect of it, you can't make it any better without taking away the manual feel of the SMG

I heard SMG's start to overheat or drop gears if you track it too much?
