Question After Market Suspension with Subframe Failures Poll

Concerning subframe failure, did you have:

-OEM suspension subframe failure

-Aftermarket suspension subframe failure

trying to gather some comparative data, thanks in advance.

I think you need two more poll options to get better data. You need OEM suspension with NO subframe failures and Aftermarket Suspension with NO subframe failure. Without that data, your results are worthless.

beyond that, correlation does not prove causation. The subframe fails due to sudden torque applications twisting the subframe, stressing the rear floor. Evidence of this can been seen in 330d's (euro diesel e46s) have the worst issues with subframe failure, whereas on, say, 318i's (LOW torque) it's practically unheard of.

Now, within a model range (say M3, which has a fair bit of torque compared to most e46s), it is possible (likely?) that a car with a stiffer suspension will have a higher rate of subframe failure. This doesn't mean the suspension is causing the failure-- it could (and likely does, imo) mean that the type of owner than upgrades their suspension drives the car harder (more frequent torque applications) than the type of owner that stays stock.

This is going to be hard to analyze with a old car that can have 3+ owners. Someone might have used coilovers for 10k miles, then switched to OEM for an easier sell. I'm willing to bet half the owners here aren't sure what the first owner did to their car before selling it off.

No subframe failure... sub'ing for results/discussion (bought the Redish plates in the recent GB... will be installing within the year)
