Default MY keyless entry is not working in my 2003 m3 smg vert after rear view mirror install

My keyless entry is not working in my 2003 m3 smg convertible after rear view mirror install. I had one of those oval mirrors and the glass was messed up it looked like the film inside cracked and oil is leaking inside the mirror. It didnt look good to me and im not a fan of the oval mirror and i dont see any need to spend $200-$500 on a mirror. So I went ahead and took a rear view mirror out of my 2000 528i. It had the same type of rain sensor like the m3 did. Anyways i put it in and it plugged well and afterwards keyless entry dont work should i reset it or what should i do.

Convertibles have the keyless remote antenna housed in the mirror. Unless your 528i is a convertible, it probably won't work.

I suggest that you send your mirror to be fixed for $100.

Just call these folks and they will make it right for about $100. It happened to me too and now I'm ultra happy!

Yes of course. They will take your mirror as a core, and send you a like-new, remanufactured exactly like the one you had, with everything working as it should.

If you simply do a "Search Titles Only" for "mirror" you'll find dozens of threads that already answer all of your questions.

Next time, please try to search for your answers before posting. Thanks!

You can look at this thread:

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=288794

You may be able to swap out the circuit board on the bottom and make it work. It looks like it is attached to the clown nose, so that may cause some issues.

Maybe it's better not to use your remote.

I got this as an email, not sure if it's true, but there is a possibility this happened to ur bro:

Subject: Lock your car from inside-important message

I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times. Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear it unlock again!! Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. They were obviously watching me intently, and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation .. I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight t o the police station, told them what had happened, and found out I was part of a new, and very successful, scheme being used to gain entry into cars. Two weeks later, my friend's son had a similar happening....
While traveling, my friend's son stopped at a roadside rest to use the bathroom. When he came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator, briefcase.....you name it. He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into, the police told him he had been a victim of the latest robbery tactic -- there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device..

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car -- that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you.

When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be instantly stolen.

Be wisely aware of what you just read and please pass this note on. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote just to be sure we remembered to lock them -- and bingo, someone has our code...and whatever was in our car.

In a word, no, this is not a valid issue with BMW remote keys for e46 and newer models. The code sent by the key is altered for that specific key, and if you dont have the embedded security code in your key, it wont work, as that word or phrase that is used by the key is part of the communication between key and car that is not transmitted.

See below...

Quote:
When used in the remote mode they communicate with the car's security system by radio signals. Now a completely different set of security codes comes into play that relates only to the remoting capabiliites.

Each remote key works with it's own set of security codes, and it does not care what is going on with another remote key.

The remote keys have to go through a separate "initialisation" process. When this is done the car's security unit selects a "code word" for each key ( a randomly chosen number from a base of 2 to the 48th.) This code word is transferred to the remote key and is also remembered by the car for that key. Each key has it's own randomly chosen code word.

Now each time you hit a button on a remote key the code word is incrementd by one number in it's series. So the next time you use that key with the car it is expecting to see the next higher number. Since you might hit a button away from the car it tracks a series of numbers and will resync the key & code if it is within a certain range. If you hit a button often enough away from the car to get outside the expected range, then you will have to hit a button twice before the car will resond - and then put itself back in sync for that key. There is another higher range (1000 strikes) that if you go beyond that the car will not respond and you will have to re-initialise all the remote keys - they then start will new code words again.

So essentially the car keeps track of the "code word series" of numbers for "each remote key".

And that is how they can use the remote keys to trigger "memory functions" for each key.
