Default Best diff ratio for daily driven e36 m3 converted from auto to 6 speed

Stock diff is a 3.38 I believe, car converted using an e46 m3 6 speed. The e46 guys opt to use a 3.91 or 4.10 but I think the 3.91 is the most popular.
Seeing as how I am down a bit on power compared to the e46 m3 would a 3.91 be a great street diff on a daily driver or should I go with something more tame?

Since your S52 does not rev as high, your speeds in gear will be low with the 3.91 or 4 10 and stock limiter. 1st may become of limited use. I would get the limited changed to 7200 and run aftermarket cams and M50 manifold and full aftermarket exhaust so you make power past 6000. I'd look at 3.64, 3.73 and 3.91. 3.91 is cheapest -- 325i auto winter package.

Thanks, I'm probably going to order one from diffsonline.com so its a fresh unit anyway.
Car will be here in about a week, I'll drive it around for a week or so to see how it jives.

The 6 speed is the same ratios 1-5 as the 5 speed. 3.38 should be pretty good as is. The higher the ratio, the faster you'll be changing gears. All depends on what you want.

I like the stock drive ratio on my 6 speed. I believe it is well matched to the engine.

3.46 or a 3.64 imo You will have both low end and top end. The nice thing about that extra gear.

3.38 or 3.46 on an S52, and I'd lean towards the 3.38. You don't have revs or power at high revs, so a short diff is a bit pointless.

A 3.91 turns a 6 speed into the same gearing as your stock 5spd and 3.23. That's a waste without higher rpms.

I didn't understand this. Can you please explain more. Thanks

I had a 3.91 on my supercharged six-speed S52 for a couple of years. It was fun for a while but soon became tiring because I always find myself reaching for third gear way quicker than I should. By the time I got in third, I had already lost the time I gained from the acceleration.

If you do a lot of city driving and don't like to shift a lot than 3.91 is not a bad choice. I had no issue with slowly cruising around town and leaving the gear in 5th with my old setup.

Anyway, I eventually replaced my 3.91 with a 3.46 diff, which matches the car's power band much better. The engine RPM on the highway is also much more bearable than the 3.91 unit.

I ran a 3.23, 3.38 and 3.64. 3.64 was lots of fun -- except on long highway trips if you like to drive fast. It made me want a 6 speed for highway use. I would have been very happy with it and a 6 speed. But instead I added the cost of a 6 speed conversion to the proceeds from selling my supercharger and went turbo -- with turbo torque you don't need short gearing and I have been running a 3.15 since and am considering a 2.93.
