many people are incredibly afraid of owning a BMW out of warranty
I believe the fear is misplaced. I've driven three to 170k miles with few issues.

Nice thread... I've been away too long. I had an e46 M3 before getting rid of it at 80k or so miles. I didn't have many issues with it. Moved into a 997.2 and it's currently for sale as I'm getting all caught up and trying to decide if I go e90 or f80. It will be the first sedan I've ever bought

But you have not paid a shop to maintain and fix them. Those paying retail probably get tired of the increasing costs as cars age and would prefer to put the money towards a newer car. BMW in the 2nd or 3rd half of their lives are great for DIYers and ok for owners with local reasonable independent shops.
