Could be O2 sensors.

Has the car sat for a long time?

You really need to use a BMW diagnostic such as INPA or DIS to be very clear what's happening.

yes car does sit seems strange for it to be o2 sensors with symptoms occurring in open loop on one cylinder

Im not saying this is a fix, but I had a similar issue when cold as you describe, in cyl 5, then 4c that was resolved by a fresh set of coils.
