Also, I wanted to ask those who have the 4.10s, how much whine do you really get? I'll be running oem diff cover bushings but the RE front diff mount. I'm not upgrading to the poly cover bushings because I want to keep the whine to a minimum. I know its common to get some whine on decel. but wanted to confirm from others.

Any feedback on these two questions is greatly appreciated!

so many mixed things on the diff whine! Seems like most are saying the whine is normal between 60-80 mph and decel... some are saying no whine at all..

I have Powerflex race bushings on my 3.91 and it whines a bit on the highway.

Have you ever been tested? Simplifying a lot, but tinnitus is more or less your brain's attempt to fill in missing information from your inner ear. I'm 27 with tinnitus, and have moderate-severe hearing loss in both ears.

I've been communicating with Jim Blanton at Performance Gearing about a diff upgrade. He mentioned that that there would be some increased noise (whine) with the 4.10 gears because BMW Motorsports gearsets are not lapped like production gears, and that around 2014 this got worse when BMW changed the surface treatment.

Of course, plenty of snake oils out there to help with it too! It probably took me close to 5 years before I got used to it enough to sleep through the night and I began to "tune" it out during the day. Sucks about your hearing loss, I did not suffer any, I just have lots of very high pitched constant ringing that feels like a string being pulled through my head if I concentrate on it.

My friend wing'd my car by using the stock shims on my 4.10 install.
No whine other than low rpm 20mph... and it's gone after that.
And it's very very minor. Drives perfect IMO As long as when you spin the diff, it's not too tight or loose, it should drive fine.
(OEM Diff bushings) Solid Subframe bushings.
