I experienced ALL of these problems on my SMG with 52K miles. Every problem the original OP described went on for 4yrs, +30K miles. The car spent numerous trips to BMW (under an aftermarket warranty up to 100K). Even broke down in the middle lane of the fwy during rush hour traffic. Car wouldn't go into gear and had CHP tow me off to the side of the road. BMW scored about 12K in repairs from my warranty company and the car NEVER ran correctly!

Last resort was when the SMG pump took a dump. Went to Lang Racing and swapped to a 6spd. NEVER looked back!!! Been a couple years and lots of mileage (apprx 17K) and no more codes, problems, or break downs!!! The car also runs so much stronger that ever! Nice reliable car with a nice manual transmission.

So you had a worn clutch/ToB, a bad slave cylinder, and a malfunction in the throttle system and swapped the transmission? Seems like you are butt hurt about being screwed by your mechanic and don't even know who or what to blame. I see you quoted an insurance payout but how much did the SMG swap cost in total?

I got tired of getting beat by vettes and every other performance car so I dumped that N/A shit and never looked back.

The repair work was performed at a BMW dealership, at the cost of the warranty company. The biggest pain was taking the car back over and over again, to try to fix it. The dealership kept replacing parts but it just wouldn't run correctly. Once the SMG pump went out (and the warranty expired), I took matter into my own hands and did the SMG to manual conversion. It uses the same transmission that was in the car as it's a conversion, not a swap.

Fair enough. I bet your dealer mechanic got a helluva commission check by pointing the finger at the SMG. Insurance company rep would be clueless to fight it.

You should have bought an Alberta car. M3s are less costly here than almost anywhere else in North America. I just managed to sell a slick top manual finally after 2 years.
Now back to your problem. I'm not really big on coincidences. Car ran fine for 1500 km then problems started. Slave and then new clutch. Now issues. I would be looking at something buggered up in the clutch job. SMG motor and pump should not be bad now if they were okay before. There are a lot of pressure lines in the trans tunnel, one could be leaking. As well, if you bought the car in Canada, the SMG motor should last forever. Heat cooks them, no heat in Canada!

Thatís what I thought too. I live in Vancouver where people arenít dropping like flies when it gets hot. But my SMG motor decided to call it quits at 100,000 miles. I rarely sit in traffic and Iím mostly on the highway and suburbs during non-gridlock. I mean, my failed SMG motor was 14 years old...so it built up and wore out after a long time.
