Nice explanation above, Cleveland.

I've got an '04 e46, 44K mi, I've never needed to add even a drop of oil between oil changes. The oil level hugs the upper line on the dipstick, even 5-7K mi after last change.

is the best oil for an E93 "FUll Synthetic Castrol 10W 60?

Also, is it best to add the oil when the engine is cold (before driving off)

The manual says to only add 1 litre at a time, my current oil guage is on minimum

My car was low at the first oil change, and I've added two liters since. My car has 9200 miles on it now.

After the 1200 mile change... My M3 went down a quart/liter at about 12,000 miles, then the oil change was done at about 15,000 with no oil useage. Now I am at about 11,000 miles and I am down about 1/2 quart... showing 3000 miles to oil change so I believe I will make it. So end result, I'm using a quart about every 11 to 14000 miles.

I got my 2009 M3 used with 12000 miles on it. I changed the oil at that time, and changed it again at 15000 as scheduled (flushing things out). My last change was at 22000 with the oil reading 3/4 full (down 1/4 liter after 7000 miles). The BMW dealership let me know that the car has a 100,000 maintenance package. I didn't know that when I bought the car, but appreciate it with $250 oil changes.

Added 1 liter at about 6500 miles on the ticker.

I drive between 120 and 160 mph regularly on the Autobahn and did a few laps on the Nürburgring. 120 mph is leisurely cruising here.

1 liter for 1000 miles? Try 400-600 miles on my e92. Also, is BMW supposed to top off the oil after an oil change? This is the second time that they didnt' do it.

First 1000 miles, ~1 quart (hard MOTO-style break-in)
Next 7500 miles <1 quart.
Next 7500 miles 0 quarts.. (oil level has not moved).

1L bottle only so it means .05 more than 1 quart I could not believe that its 200.00 for an oil change crazy! the only time I noticed that the car burned oil it was after my 1,200 mile check up i bought 2 bottles of Castrol ( about 1 litter 1/4 ) at the dealership about 17.00 a piece..I pored i little more than needed ... Very bad Idea no Dip stick! What is the recommeneded time frame to change your oil if you use the Castrol synthetic?
