These are tough choices. An E39M5 -- another old BMW but a legendary one. A reasonably current classic with the last of the high revving ITB motors -- the E90M3. A practical but perhaps expensive to maintain semi performance wagon like the E61 535xi. A Ford F150. And a C63 (I wouldn't mind an E63 AMG Bi Turbo but that does not fit the budget). Or maybe an Audi -- they do have nice interiors but I have heard they can be expensive to maintain out of warranty (I sort of like the RS7 but that is out of the budget -- an S6 with tune might get pretty close).

Lots of cool cars in the $30k range, I'm bad at the "daily" argument though. I would look for a Cayenne Turbo, E63 AMG, CTS-V, something along those lines.

If you are not fixated on high end brands... the focus rs and fiesta st are a riot to drive.

Some great ideas here! I would love the e39 M5/e90 M3 route, but agree with one of the posts that the age and maintenance on each might be a little bit of a turn off. I know I want something that I could, in theory, drive for a few years and 25-30k miles without needing anything other than oil changes and basic normally scheduled maintenance. Something that is post 2010 seems to have the best chances of that with lower mileage.

Focus RS is a blast to drive, might be a little small though for what I am looking for. 328/335 M sport seems to be a nice balance. CTS V is an interesting option as well..I also really like the AMG wagon and the Volvo V60 Polestar, but both are a little outside the budget.

Don't ask me, I drive a C7 Corvette. but I also have a Tacoma, the wife has a Sportage AWD turbo, so we have practical covered.

Rich, no Mini Cooper anymore? I'll make sure to bring by whatever I end up with for minor work so the battery can die in the rain on my way home haha btw I will have to send you some pictures of that car now, new interior and exterior!

Nope, traded it two years ago to get the Corvette. As great as the C7 is, (and it really is an awesome car), I still miss how fun the Mini was.

E90 335 (which I would recommend all day over a E90 M3)

Great engine with decent mod ability up to 400whp
Can be...expensive maintenance (water pumps, misfires are common issues)
Bad chassis for back roads, heavy and bottoms front suspension out often. Struts help this, but chassis doesn't have enough front wheel travel IMO.
Good chassis for highways, with lots of power (BPU HP levels) and comfort.
Trash info-tainment with little options to upgrade to double din units "cleanly"
Looks nice and much better interior than E36s.
No full size spare or even room to put one....forces you onto run flats or risk it.

Avoid 6AT....doesn't like high torque levels and throws codes (why I moved on)
6MT are better for mods, but hard to find. Manuals will be worth something...some day.
Xdrive is also to be avoided if modding. Transfer case doesn't handle torque well at single turbo levels.

IMO, (2011s) N55 is better engine for reliability, but arguably not quite as stout as N54s.

I have an F30 328i M-Sport and it's a solid daily. Reading the forums you'll probably get a mixed-bag in terms of reliability but I haven't had any issues - just normal maintenance. While I love driving my e36M, sometimes it's nice to just hop into the F30 and not have to deal with the drama. I have several long road trips under my belt in the F30 (including a cross-country Seattle to Cincinnati) and the seats are fantastic. Really miss the support when sitting in my Vaders. Adaptive suspension is nice and overall comfort improved significantly when I changed out the run-flats.

No longer need a DD so it's for sale :-)

Saw yours for sale since I have been hanging out on the FS section of the F30 forum for research purposes. Love the Estoril Blue, wish it was MT I would have been giving you a call to come out and take a look!
