Default On the hunt for a newer DD to pair with my E36..Interested in Opinions

Hey everyone, I recently sold my E46 M3 and am down to just my E36 M3. It wasn't practical having 2 coupes and the E46 was getting to the point where it was probably going to start needing more love and I had grown tired of SMG.

Anyway...in my current situation I won't need a DD until probably next fall so it gives me the time to 'Do things Properly' as they said on the old Top Gear and travel to or take the time to find the right car.

I already know I want something that has a MT and probably want to stay BMW, and a sedan or wagon. I am interested to hear what those that have an E36 and newer BMW have to say about how they like it, maintenance issues and how it compares. Or if you were in my shoes with the same basic parameters what would you get? Even if it isn't a BMW

I love my E36 but something a little newer that still has some fun qualities is what I envision driving every day and racking up the commuting miles on. I have driven a 435 M sport before but haven't gotten many miles in anything else other than E46/E36

I am sure this has been discussed before at some point too, but with the market always changing somethings that maybe weren't an option before are now!

Budget: not over 30k all in
Mileage: Under 50k

My short list so far:
E90 M3 (probably a stretch)
E90 328/335 (with M-sport packages)
E91 M-sport (Impossible to find)
F30 328/335 M-sport

Looking forward to hearing some experiences/input!

I've been going back and forth on getting a f30 335i xdrive Msport as my daily. A good friend of mine has a 2014 and I love it.

Has all the creature comforts, it's practical and it's fun to drive. If you're waiting until next fall, i'm sure the prices on the f30 will continue to drop and you'll be well below 30k all in.

E90 or E92 M3. You can find them for as little as about $25k. I bought my 08M3 when it was 2.5 years old and have had it almost 7 years. Great car. If the rod bearings have not been done, you may want to do them -- $500-$800 in parts and a day of your time or a shop's time. Mine has been very reliable, but I do maintain it well. With some mods, they wake up (over the years I have done bolt on stuff like braided brake lines, stoptech street pads, bilstein B8 shocks/struts, H&R springs, poly diff and subframe bushings, carbon fiber one piece driveshaft, high flow x-pipe, dinan tune, water/meth injection with more ignition timing, intake, underdrive pulley, wider and lighter wheels and wider tires, cat back exhaust). Mine is a 6MT but I would actually rather have a DCT and my next car will likely be DCT or auto and AWD.

I've loved my f30 335 and have considered keeping it after the lease period (up in march), but the Jag f-pace is probably next.

Mine's an m-sport with all the bells and whistles and it's so much fun to drive and it gets 28 mpg consistently in mixed driving. Putting on good tires (PSS) makes a huge difference. BTW, wholesale on that car is around $22-24k.

If you are not opposed to older cars, get 2002-3 E39 M5. Definitely could get one for around $30K under 50K miles.

I just got a 2000 323i touring. Perfect DD and only cost 3k. That leaves like 27k for e36 parts with your budget.
I would have got a golf R if I was going newer and nicer, but I bought 1/4 the car at 1/10 the price so it’s good for me.

Only problem with E39M5 is that it's only one generation newer than the e36. It's a great car but getting old and will probably need more time, attention and money than a newer car. I'd stick with something in the 5-10 year old range as a complement to the old E36.

We also have an 08 535xit. Had it since it was 2.5 years old also. They were sold here for only 3 years, ending in 2010 and manual trans are very rare. Ours is auto, and it's a good auto -- just as fast as the manual version. Has the excellent twin turbo N54 motor that is easily and relatively cheaply upgraded to nearly 400 rwhp and nearly 500 lbs rwtq, at which point it moves pretty well (we have only a JB4 tune so more like 350rwhp and 400 lbs rwtq and I think it goes pretty good). And its a wagon with AWD so it's practical. But they do have a few issues you need to be aware of -- clogged sunroof drains can cause water to leak into the trunk and damage electronics, the hatch wiring harness can fray and the hatch hydraulics may need to be repaired. And many of them were dealer serviced and probably need an extensive old school servicing. I have maintained ours since the CPO expired in 2014.

I drove the 240i, 340i, 440i and 540i on the track at a BMW event. The 2,3 and 4 series were all performance packages. I was not really impressed by any of them but I am into performance for my own cars. I would have to mod any of those to make them entertaining to me. I did drive a nicely modded 2011 135i (newer small single turbo N55) recently and thought it would make a good successor to the E36).

Get a truck if you don't have one.
