Default 95 M3, swapped 96-99 hats for camber, steering super tight and pulls?

I put some new struts up front recently on my newly aquired 95M3, per this write up http://m3pink.blogspot.com/2011/11/e...part_8300.html i swapped the hats for reversed 96-99 strut mounts, which give it about -3 degrees of camber and a little bit of caster.

The car is also lowered on H&R sports, just a reasonable drop, I don't rub or bottom out.

The car really does handle tight curves and corners like a monster, I live in New York with some great back roads. But after the swap the steering has a constant slight pull to the right. I got an alignment and they said the numbers were in spec but it was still pulling to the right. The steering also feels very tight and requires much more effort than before, along with some not to nice noises.

Apparently this is a commonly ran modification, anyone with this swap care to chime in? I've tried many things like wheel bearings, calipers, tires are new. No steering vibration til maybe 100mph. Just always have to pull a bit left

Are the front springs set properly?

That was one of my guesses, it was fine before i did the hat swap though so I'm not sure. Also not entirely sure how to check for straightness of the tire rod?

I think so, they're H&R sports on a regular shock/strut set up. With the rubber pads inside too on the spring

is there anything specific I should do to set them? the fronts seem to be about the same height, although the rear height seems a bit off side to side

Check the fronts to insure the end windings are indexed into the steps in the casing and the “hat”.

Swap the rears side to side to see if it settles.

Were these new springs or second hand?

I did this. Was great at first, but switched it back. The car began to pull to one side and a rhythmic drone started sounding from the front end. I don't recall steering being heavier - but it might have been. Car was also twitchy at highway speeds.

Turns out, the swapped mounts wore the tires on the inboard side, which is expected, but the wear was very quick and very uneven. Tires were new.

For a track day, the swap is a great, cheap, & fast way to get additional camber. But I wound't recommend it on a daily driver.

While camber influences where a tire wears, toe accelerates the wear, and cross-toe produces weird handling and excessive wear.

Wow Bluptgm3 was right on the money. I jacked up the front today and the right side spring had spun out of the indexed spot. had to take out the shock, compress the spring and adjust but it turns much better with no clicking at all now. Steering is a bit tight still but not as bad. Still slight right pull as well but not as much now. Thanks blu
