Default Re: What was your first car before you eventually got your e46 M3?

Memory lane:

1) 1990 Honda CRX Si. One of THE most enjoyable driver's cars I have ever experienced. Sure, "only" 108hp, however, at ~2,100 lbs, with an engine that revs freely, Recaro seats, one of the smoothest shifting manual transmission, fantastic suspension tuning, and great sight-lines out of the vehicle made it a complete package. It epitomizes the saying: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Oh, and consistently 30+ mpg regardless of how hard you drove it doesn't hurt either - especially since it doesn't require premium fuel.

It's the one car I shouldn't have sold.

2) 1988 528e 5spd, the "super-eta." The relative lightness of the "small six" as compared to the 535i "big six" made the 528e a better balanced car. Steering provided nice feedback, the transmission shifted smoothly, torque was sufficient (especially since it came on early in the rev range). BMW did (and continues to do) a great job with suspension geometry. Add a Ground-Control coilover+camber plate setup, and some poly control arm bushings to it and it was a really fun driving car. Oh, and changing out the semi-truck sized granny steering wheel for a M-technic II euro wheel made a huge difference.

Very enjoyable. The only mod I wanted to do was to add a limited slip diff, and find some period-correct BMW Sport seats. I'd still have it if I didn't put it into a curb on a wet day - Driver error; lesson learned!

3) '01 Toyota Camry CE. 4cyl, AT. Still have it. This is my "mule." Almost a quarter million miles and the only item I replaced other than regular maintenance is a radiator, a driver's side window regulator, and a driver's side exterior door handle . ($75 for the radiator, ~$35 for the regulator, and ~$9 for the painted door handle! Love it).

The AC's cold, the radio works, 87 octane is all it needs. I don't get upset if someone opens a door into it, or it gets scratched and scrapes -battle scars that don't hurt. I'll drive it until the wheels fall off, and when that happens buy some wheels for cheap and do it again for another 250k miles. Toyotas make some of the best appliances for mobility.

4) 1989 e30 m3. Still have it; 'nuff said.

5) '01 330i AT, sedan, sport/premium. It's a fun commuter car, handles like a BMW should, and the consistent 26mpg hwy is nice.

And then the e46 m3. I believe the e46, and the e39 were the last of a generation of automobiles where the chassis tuning (pure engineering, before all of the electronic doo-dads) really shines. It's one of the reasons this is a keeper for me.

-Great thread, btw.

Seriously. Exactly like the wagons below. Fabulous leather seats.
One night all the cars in the block were spray painted, except mine. They must have thought that it was already ugly enough.

1998 Cadillac Eldorado with STOCK suspension from 1998 with 170k on it. Was not a good ride but was smooth on street so didn't care.

1997 E36 328ci which I was the victim of odometer fraud by 100k+ miles

My first cars, which were owned by different family members, when I started driving, were a lincoln mark vii and then a chevy silverado. When i saved up enough, I got "my" first car in 2010 which was a 06 mazda6. I am still driving the mazda as my "daily" although I hardly ever actually drive it now since I take home cars from work. It has been a great daily and I have put about 100k on it in the 5 years I've owned it, with hardly any problems whatsoever.

Here is a pic of it next to the M3 while I was redo-ing my garage floor. Please excuse the crappy plasti-dipped wheels: I put it on when i was 17 and really need to get around to removing it. The mazda stays outside while the M3 and the other car stay nice inside. The other car under the cover is me and my roommates' '68 Mustang restomod project, btw.

Came from 2002 M5. Before that it was an E36 M3. The E46 is the perfect blend of both.

'79 Honda Civic with torque monster 1.2l engine - 65 rootin' tootin' HP

'84 GTI - drove this for 200K miles - so much fun!!

'85 RX7 GSLSE - got a great deal, low miles - put 100K on it, but lacked personality - best car in the snow I've owned

'99 F150 - had this w/RX7

'01 M3 (current) - traded F150 for this, bought 5/01 now has 115K miles - my toy & 3 season DD. Most fun car I've ever driven.

'99 Jeep - traded RX7 for this, my winter beast - put 150K on this

'12 GTI - wow, with chip - so much fun but too much HP for clutch & fwd and only 2 doors so vetoed by my wife. :-(

'11 335iX (current) - needed 4 door, 6 MT, practical, Dinan chip - fast but feels like Buick compared to M3. GTI was way more fun.

Had a C55 AMG before the M3, it had a hell of a lot more torque and was arguably more fun to drive around town, but that's it. I don't regret switching one bit.
