It was a wonderful car when I owned one, but the new one is just much better all around and the old M3 is simply outclassed with the recent release of FI high performance cars.
I bought my last 5 M3's because I value steering feel, throttle response, and high revving, high specific output NA engines, in a car that can be reasonably DIY maintained in the long term.

AKA, BMW has managed to nix every reason I bought the car with the latest version.

"better" is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm with Obioban here. The M4 is technologically better than the E9xM3, but I have no idea how we're going to DIY maintain it in a reasonable manner. It's easier to live with, no doubt, but where's the visceral nature of it? The original M3 (had one) had that in spades. I don't want a shetland pony, I want a thoroughbred. On acid.

The E9xM3 is the last of its kind. While it's a bit on the heavy side, it's like a 'full figured' girl that is into kinky stuff. Sure, she'll go cray-cray on you once in a while, and some of the piercings are a bit odd, but in the long run the relationship will be more satisfying than the uptight, but thinner girl in the suit and sensible heels. YMMV.

I would not call 300lbs of flat torque throughout the power band lacking. Much rather have the intoxicating top end than more torque at 2k rpm as I roll off the line just to have my engine choke at 5k rpm. e92 M3 has its own issues, engine is not one of them

I'd rather have more torque and keep the high end power

It's perfectly fine as it, it's just not as torquey as I expected.

Get a M5

IMO the torque is fine, the car is a bit too heavy. Had it been 250lbs lighter car would have been awesome. This V8 is different than american muscle, play with it in 5-8 k rpm and you will finally fall in love

(Only the e39 or f10 m5 are torquey)

Yeh, meant F10 but e39 is torquey too. Obviously the V10 is very similar to S65 in power delivery and character

The looks of the new M3/M4 are really growing on me...I think I like it now, even with all the unnecessary body designs. Looks mean as hell when modded. It's the exhaust sound...the sound I cannot get over. Sounds like sh*t no matter what exhaust you put on it.

I'm gonna stick with my E9X M3.

I shied away from the e92 M3 for several years, believing that the larger, more luxuriously appointed car would lack the raw, visceral feel of my e46 M3. Well now I have an e92 and I was wrong. Is it more comfortable? Yes. Does it offer more than the older car? Yes. Does it still have the visceral fel that only an M can have? Absolutely. I don't know if the new f-series M3 will carry on the same tradition, and many of the initial road testers lament the loss of steering feel inherent in electronically controlled power steering. However they said the same things about the new Porsche 911, Cayman, and Boxster when they came out last year, but are slowly changing their tune. Only time will tell.

I'd have an e92 over and e46 vert, too. The vert isn't very good-- undermines everything the e46m does well :P
