Question Convertible rear-seat-back removal?

I was struggling tonight to remove the rear-seat back on my '98 convertible.

Bentley was basically useless. it showed the fold-down seats and the fixed sedan seat, had nothing on the covertible seat.

The lower cushion is easy - like most BMWs - just grab the front edge, pull up and then slide it out.

I then looked to try to find what holds the seat-back on. On other models (E28, E34) there were tabs with some bolts at the bottom edge of the seat, remove these and pivot bottom out. Not on this seat. Feeling along the bottom edge, I could feel what appears to be a slot in the body work that a tab on the seat slides down into. So - that means the seat has to be lifted up, but it refused to budge.

I was unable to remove the rear headrests (and this was standing in the rear of the car where the seat bottom cushion usually was and pulling up from under the headrests as hard as I can (I can usually do about 200lbs that way in the gym..) Didn't budge.

Anyone BTDT?

I got my project done without removing it (I was wiring up my parking-distance-controllers and had to run the wiring for the display up to the console.. finally fished it through where the big battery cable goes into the trunk..)

I'd like to know how it comes out - just so I know it..

TIA!

once you remove the headrests, the back comes right off, they lock it in place.

try squirting some silicone spray down the headrest posts, they tend to get stuck, but once you remove them once they should be easy from then on.

Thanks, I'll give that a try tonight. I was on the right path, just stuck with the rock in the road..

yep, been there, pulled those. First time I got them out I was afraid I was going to break them....but there's no trick except it would have been easier for me if I had sprayed silicon or similar down there. I kinda wiggled them up, then once out they come out fine now...just be careful, I've seen people rip them apart trying to get them out.

Sometimes theyre a pain to pull. I actually sat on the lid and straddled the headrest and pulled it up. Once theyre out the seat just snaps out.
