Make sure to get the short sport. The 5hp24 trans with high stall tq converter, short rear axle ratio etc really transform the car compared to say a 97 non sport with the old 5hp30 trans.

The engine bay looks a bit different, oil filler is more forward. You can also pop the rear seat bottom cushion and look for the fuel pump..

If the car is not in front of you the easiest way would be to run the vin through a decoder (eg. http://bimmer.work/). If it says it has an M56 then it's a sulev.

Do you enjoy driving the X5? I felt the N62/6hp26 combo was a step down from the M62tu/5hp24 of my E38. Then again your 4.8 has a ton more power and torque.

I toyed with the idea of something that could tow (could come in handy!) but after the X5 i knew I didn't want a truck lol.

I enjoy the 4.8is a ton. I have a large German Shepherd and I live currently in the North East so having space, AWD, power and a heated steering wheel is awesome.

At times I prefer driving it to the E46 M3.

And if the tranny goes, Getrag 420G is going in.

Makes sense.

On the other hand I have no dogs, no inclement weather. Oh and the increased turning radius caused by the presence of front half shafts drove me nuts

I guess it's all about uses and needs. I'm glad you're enjoying it. The 4.8is is one sexy beast!

It's stupid expensive to own. Kinda hate it for that only reason.

S54 E46 Touring would be a sweet DD, in terms of fun.

I dont think there is ever a 'perfect' DD, because we always get bored with a vehicle that is soft and convenient...but then get tired of getting beat up and always having to work driving something that is on edge, and involving. That's why you get a decent DD, but mix it up driving that and your fun car. You just can't take your fun car too far down the track only path and ruin it's on road practicality.

I'm looking for a 2008+ X5 with the V8. I think that would be a great compliment...plus could tow my car whenever I didn't want to drive it long distances to track days. I like them better than my Touareg.

Beat me to making a journal Kevin!

Maybe I shouldn't so I don't end up putting in an S54

I love this immediately. Red looks great on that car.

I actually loved my grey/wood interior in my 330Ci. Except how easily it showed dirt, anyway...

Great, two more people who are going to beat me to it. Damn this poverty.

Kevin, I think you'll find the wiring to be much simpler than you're fearing. Especially with all your experience manipulating the three main harnesses forward of the firewall, not to mention your organizational skills. (Unless you're just tricking us with all the photos of your jobs being so neatly lined up!)

You've done an S54 swap though. Give it an S62 or something instead. More of that V8 feel you miss about the E38 (another car I loved).

Congrats man! Wiring isn't so bad with the S54 swap
