Looks really good. How is the fit and finish? Are the dimensions the same as the e36 lights?

You know I always missed the little mood lights when I went from my 330 to my M3, can't wait for the DIY!

Yeah, I love the mood lights! Is there any way to do a mood light job without the entire new dome-light setup?...btw, nice job on the creative mod!

I'll have a write-up soon.

The E46 Dome light is slightly smaller on the sides than the E36 one... But the E46 one is wider (front to back). It required that I cut out the support bar for the E36 one, and cut back the sunroof switch panel.

My moms E39 Dome light (mood lights, and looks more like E36) look wider and a possible better match.

Once I figure it out i'll get the DIY up.

I have, as part of retrofitting the E39 dome light in my E36. I gave some details of my install at bimmerforums starting at post #23. Unfortunately, you need to register and log in to see the pictures.

I substituted superbright white LEDs following the current, "best practice" in aircraft cockpit lighting and dimmed them using PWM. I programmed one of my "mini automotive controllers" to service the middle light switch, provide a service lock out, allow the ambient lighting level to be set to whatever you wish, and add night light and map light functions.

If I post more pictures and details here will people have to register and log in to see them? (Assuming there's any interest in that!)

Here's a picture showing the ambient lighting pattern. (Normally, you would not have it cranked up so high, but whatever floats your boat.)
