Alright, before you buy this thing, do the following to see if you can swallow the bitter pill that is maintaining it - that is, if you take it to a shop to get it maintained and/or fixed.

Find out the cost of the usual suspects for maintenance, which would be:
1) Fuel Pump
2) Water Pump, Radiator, Expansion Tank, T-Stat, Etc (Entire Cooling Sys)
3) Alternator
4) Brakes

My guess is that if you take it to a Dealer, that seems to me about $7+ Large worth of cost, but of course, call and find out for yourself. If this in your opinion, is not bad, then proceed with getting the car checked out as in a pre-purchase inspection. As for the short answer of buying the car, there used to be a well known Porsche magazine writer who would always say, "Buy the newest Porsche you can afford." Re-echoing this advice, buy the newest E9X M3 you can afford. Happy buying...

I think it's a good deal. Cars break, can you afford to fix it? Is it to be your only car? I think M cars are best suited to toy status with a dedicated DD so if it does break it can be fixed at your financial pace. I do all my own repairs and maintenance which helps a lot. I just did brakes and tires on my E93 I DIYed the brakes and the tires we high end extreme performance yokohamas on my 18 oem wheel set and it was over 2 grand. Tires are even more expensive for my 19 inch wheels these cars do require deeper pockets than most others. This in my opinion is also a car you should by with cash, if you have to finance it pick something else.

Yes, 2012 and 13 models affected. From another class action website I follow:

Allegedly, the defect creates an “insufficient supply of engine oil to coat the bearing surfaces” of the connecting rod bearings, which causes “accelerated wear on the Bearings surfaces in all [BMW M3s], ultimately causing them to disintegrate and fracture.” The class action lawsuit alleges this defect creates a “rattling” or “clacking” noise when the engine is idling.

The bearing defect can lead to “catastrophic engine failure,” according to the BMW M3 class action lawsuit. As the metal bearings wear down, pieces of bearing metal get distributed throughout the engine in the engine oil. The complaint alleges that this can lead to many different serious issues, such as a loss of power steering, or power assistance to the braking system.

The class action lawsuit alleges that BMW has been, or should have been, aware of the M3 defect since July of 2013. The engine defect lawsuit alleges that BMW knew about the bearing defect from numerous complaints to its dealerships, its website, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as well as replacement part orders.
