Arrow What would you pay for this example?

Looking at a Cosmo Sedan, its auto but it seems like a great candidate to be swapped. Clean interior (re-wrapped by dealership) and the body has zero dents. Asking about $5,000 but obviously, that's not going to be the case. Just how low would a reasonable offer be? Thanks

Default Re: What would you pay for this example?

1. Car is advertised as Techno Violet
2. There is no mention of maintenance records (definitely ask for some)
3. I would double check CarFax
4. 20 point inspection claim is irrelevant, get it inspected yourself before getting serious
5. Chrome DS2 (not a good sign)
5. Incredibly hazy headlights (sign of neglect)
6. Cheap front indicator lenses
7. Ebay special taillights
8. Needs new exhaust hangers
9. Mismatched body moldings (different shades of fade/50 shades of grey)
10. Has a 3rd & 4th brake light (I know it was probably dealer installed when new, but that would drive me insane having a 3rd brake light in the rear window and another on the ugly factory rear spoiler.)
11. Check light is on
12. The dealer didn't care to do a proper detail on the car (water spots everywhere), this should tell you something about the dealer, and the previous owner(s)

Remember the 10k rule. Though, I think to get this car up to my standards it looks more like a 20k rule. Personally, I'd stay clear unless you want a project.

You guys are a tough crowd. Details don't bother me with such an old/low priced car.

All that really matters is:

1. Is the body and paint all/near original
2. Does the motor/drivetrain feel healthy
3. Does the chassis feel tight on the road

If those check out, it's probably a safe bet for <5k. A test drive will be very telling in this case. For all we know, that thing could drive like a new car in which case it'd be a steal.

The dealer is required to smog the car which means they must fix the CEL.

I'm going to tend to agree. I've seen much crappier E36 M3's for $5k.

I agree the eBay parts are usually red flags for me, but if your intentions are to swap the car, none of these things would stop me from buying this car for the correct price.

Wow...I've never seen a real dealer have such a shtty selection of used vehicles. Some of those cars wouldn't even sell at auction.

What's your budget?

If your budget is $10,000 I could see you paying 4k for the car and dumping another 6k into it, easily. Is 6k going to be enough to bring it up to your standards? Like Eric said, a test drive would definitely help. Going by pictures along, regardless of the appearance of condition, isn't a good idea. Go drive it and report back!

My logic behind buying a car has always been:

Pay more upfront to avoid spending more later. For $10,000 you could find another example that needs far less work, but if the car drives alright and you want a project, that's up to you.

If I wanted to make that car perfect, I wouldn't take it for free, but for something to thrash around for a couple years, maybe 4k.

This is the same advice I'd give. It sounds like you want a nice car from what you've mentioned in other threads Chas3n. I think its in your best interest to up the budget and get something you will be happy with right off the bat. I don't know your situation, and ultimately its up to you, but man things can add up QUICKLY on a car that only seems a little bit neglected.
