I've also seen a late 97 that had side airbags. The 97s and 98s cost about the same in the marketplace but my insurance company insisted that 98s were worth an extra $1k. So keep that in mind.

The one plus with the 97s is they are less likely to have the sticky 5th gear issue.

I have a 6/98 build and it has the illuminated shift know and 3 spoke wheel if that helps.

The only sedans i've seen with a 3-spoke are the ones with owners who retrofitted them, and i've seen a lot of sedans. I'm not calling BS on you, but this is news to me.
must be retrofit then indeed

my bad, carry on

One plus with 97s is the better chance of getting napa leather instead of the buffalo that many 98s got stuck with.

All 98+ M3's came with the lighted shift knob.

No sedan came with the 3 spoke wheel.

98 M3's got side airbags and rear headrests, and any coupe built after 2/98 came with the 3 spoke wheel.

Aside from a few different color offerings that changed, those are the only differences.

98 sedan 10/97 build. No illuminated shift knob. It is possible it could have been replaced by a previos owner though.

I have rear head rests, 4 spoke, side airbags

Ditto to all... Except I definitely have the illuminated knob. Or at least I did... Until I replaced it with the ZHP...

Well our cars are almost twins then. My knob was glued on by a previous owner. It came off eventually but had no wires of any sort. Maybe someone ripped it all out but the wires would have needed to go somewhere for power/ground and I couldn't find that either. Now i have a ZHP.
