"The response [from BMW engineers] was that due to limitations on the number of engineers available, and the need to implement rolling changes as well as to design the car, a 4 door [E46] M3 was not going to happen."

"The reason [BMW AG] didn't offer the E46 in the sedan/wagon form is because of internal competition with the M5"

A shame that this one didn't pan out:

"Looks like BMW is agreeing with one of our favorite theories - if you're going to get a 4-door, skip the sedan and just get a wagon! In the Heard on the Strasse column of the November, 1998 issue of the Roundel, Bob Roemer reports a rumor that there will not be a E46 M3 sedan, but that the M3 Touring station wagon will take its place in the lineup. Sounds good to us, and Bob is usually right about this stuff......."

Oh well. Sounds like competition with the E39 M5 and a lack of desire to form a design team for the E46 M3 (this one I can attribute to sedans not drawing enough buyers compared to a coupe) killed the E46 M3 sedan and touring (such a shame, the lack of a touring). Although, I would have loved to see an E39 M5 Touring. Apparently one of the bosses at BMW M had an E39 M5 Touring prototype.

Well nothing here points to weak e36 sedan sales. I've heard the M5 theory, but felt it was just an excuse. My dealer was marking up e39 M5s $10k and they were around $100k out the door! For people looking to spend sub-$60k on a sport sedan, the M5 wasn't an option.

Funny how BMW isn't worried about the M34 stealing M5 sales now? That would actually make more sense today, with the M3 being so large and the M5 selling slower and at a discount.

Right!!! just like the e46 M3 sedan. It wasn't easy like the e36, so they didn't do it. It wasn't due to weak sales.

Phew...least were now in agreement.

The E60 M5 is in its last year of production.

Can't remember where but I came across some article last year about production costs at the time being too high to build it. Engineers determined that too much suspension geometry and chasis re-engineering would be required to make it work
