Used is still the best option in my opinion, plenty of reputable sellers on eBay that back up the condition with a short warranty. It worked great for me for $800 as I recall, I had 90 days to exchange it if there were any problems. Used SMG’s will be in great shape and cheaper than a six speed that you don’t know how rough it was treated.

It's ironic that such a mediocre transmission also has such mediocre serviceability.

Does anybody make an adapter to bolt the CD009 to an S54? Those things are everywhere and shift pretty good if I am remembering correctly.

Zf 5 speed is a decent option if your not road tripping the car much (lose 6th) Seems popular with the track crowd due to it being cheap and readily available.

Lol

Apparently, the transmission is assembled at operating temps because racecar. Thereís an old video from HPF (now I will get banned for stringing those 3 letters together...lol) that explained why the 6 speed isnít rebuildable.

Isnít rebuildable...no one really wants to. First, the box is a turd. Second, I donít think anyone sees how they can make money rebuilding these. If I needed 6th gear and a long term reliable solution, I would buy a BMW non-M ZHP 6 speed reman. Those were $2k-ish the last time I checked and you get a 2 year warranty.

If it must be OEM, reman is the only way to go. Used gear boxes will be a slightly better smelling turd than what you have now.

What would be the cheapest route? Can I buy a SMG trans, and just swap over using my current manual bellhousing or is there a cheaper route?
I bought a quality used getrag 420g from a 2005 manual car off this forum from a member i trusted a fair amount. He provided everything needed for a full swap i paid top dollar though 1800 shipped to my door.

If i could do it all over i probably would go with the ZF from the 330 zhp because its a much better tranny i am not sure what is involved in the swap however.

Depending on your milage you will easily be able to source a manual tranny nearby much much cheaper than i did.

my .02 cents

The ZF is smoother for sure, but better is debatable. It was used with the S54 on the Z4M and those tend to have 2nd gear synchro issues. The getrag was too large to fit in the chassis.

Just buy an SMG trans and swap the bellhousing and do the full manual swap. People can't seem to give those away.
