Default Question on used Bilstein PSS10's

I came across a used set of Bilstein PSS10s, but was hoping for some insight on my findings to determine if they're a good buy or if I should stay away. The seller says they've roughly 8K miles on them but doesn't recall how old they are and they were on the car when he purchased it. The one thing I notice is on the spring it shows "Bilstein 2/2005" I am assuming this is the manufacturer date?? If so, should I pass on them since they've been sitting around so long? The price is $550.

I am newer to this forum, with a recently purchased 04 Silver Gray/Imola 6spd Coupe. Loving the expertise and appreciate any insight.

Thanks!

How the hell would he know they have roughly 8k miles on them lol. You’re taking the word of the owner who took the word of the owner before him. You’re putting trust in two people here on suspension.

Unless he’s the original owner, and has proof of purchase with date etc, I’d pass. Unless you really want it, then be prepared to rebuild it when it does go.

You can put it on a shock dyno but not really worth the cost in that price range.

Iíd be wary of 2nd owner suspensions. IMO, itís worth $300-$400 max unless there is some documentation on the in service date.

Always factor a rebuild into the price when buying used dampers

Yes! Thatís exactly what I was thinking. Kind of shady so I am going to pass on them. After the hassle of putting them on and all they could be beat. I will hold out for a new set. Maybe the KW V2 or similar unless you all have a recommendation for a weekend driver. I know thereís a ton of posts about what Coilovers etc... so I can do some research

Thanks for the insight!

Koni yellow if you want an improvement over stock, TCK SA if you want a substantial improvement over stock with and are willing to pay more for it.

So Koni Yellow with some eibach springs? Ive been reading that they often don’t provide a noticeable drop over stock and possibly sitting higher in the rear?

I didn't say Eibach springs.

What does a drop accomplish for a weekend car?

Ideally I am looking for a small drop for aesthetics plus improved handling and ride quality. I was just assuming Eibachs because Iíve been reading that many owners use them in combination with Koni Yellows. I havenít owned an M3 since the late 90s so Iím back to newb status lol.

Lowering springs will remove any gain in ride quality that a better shock will provide, outside of complete setups like TCK/Ohlins/whatever.
