Just read the codes only codes I have now in DME is:

4F [079] Signal, exhaust temp sensor
8F [143] Electronics-box fan

And now a new one....

32 [050] Ignition coil, cyl. 4 as a shadow code...

Injector driver fault has NOT returned nor has crank sensor or tps sensors like I’ve consostently had before replacing everything.


Long crank is more of a lack of fuel not spark...which is odd. Didn’t clear faults trying to collect more freeze frame data so I can see number of occurances through the weekend.

So.... update

Pulled plugs and they all look good. After sitting can smell a bit of gas from cylinder 1 spark plug tube but none on others.

So possible I’ve found leaky injector!

One more thing. Performed a compression test and all cylinders are working 1-3 psi of each other across the board! At 190k miles this is great news



So...with fuel smell from spark plug tube on cylinder one we may have a leaky injector...that said that’s the same injector I’m getting injector driver fault for driver over temperature. Is it possible DME could be sending a bit of voltage holding injector open when hot and not shut off due to an internal fault...or an I just looking at a simple injector leak. Called the guy who tested/cleaned them and swore none leaked and tested them about 4 times when balance testing them with new injector I sent him for cylinder 3

So checked again, cylinder 1 and 5 both smell like gas consistently even after turning over the engine multiple times compression testing primed pump after putting main relay and fuses back and after 15 min smell gas from 1 and 5 again. Is it just valves are open on those cylinders or higher chance injector leaking on both? Sucks you can’t pull the rail and put paper towels under injectors like any other car since it’s a steel pipe to the rail...so can’t visually detect leak.

so...installed 6 new injectors.


still intermittent long crank when hot. but not as bad still running rich, fuel economy sucks. i give up. at least it fixed my top end power loss issue lol.

just wish i could get a fault code to help me here. nothing has returned.

Sometimes you just gotta take it to your trusted local indy shop and get it taken care of. Worth the peace of mind unless you have more patience to keep diagnosing.

most dont want anything to do with it, they keep it for a week and then tell me its fine.

everything ive replaced so far ive verified failure to. except fuel injectors i actually threw at it to try as fcp euro give me a full refund withing a month if i send them back installed or not. so worth the gamble.

the failure im having resembles that of a bad ECT sensor with the bad gas mileage, running rich, hard starts but i replaced it and its accurately reading when looking at live data. same with MAF sensor, unplugging either doesnt change anyting.

just trying to see if anyone else has experienced this before.

So I did a vanos test after having a single vanos failt 184 inlet vanos function in system for one occurance.

Test results are as follows:

Inlet ret.ard: 59.6
Inlet advance: -0.4
Exhaust advance: 0.5
Exhaust ret.ard: 48.9

Leak inlet 1.7
Leak exhaust 0.5

Advance time inlet: 195/212 ms
Ret.ard time inlet: 203/217 ms
Advance time exhaust: 179/212 ms
Ret.ard time exhaust: 190/193 ms

Vanos test pass

Spec is 60 and 0 inlet and 0 and 50 exhaust for advance/ret.ard so I’m damned close so timing isn’t an issue.

After we looked it over everything seemed to be in working order. Hard start may be caused by what we’re thinking is a purge solenoid that’s failing causing vapor lock on warm starts. It’s running really rich too...

Going to do more testing and report back. Vanos fault is probly the solenoid...going to drive it and see if daily returns.

update, for the hell of it pulled off the vanos valve body and solenoid pack. cut open solenoid pack with dremel and sure enough the solder joints on the intake side were broken hence my vanos code.

currently rebuilding the solenoid the same way besian does it and will report back if this fixes my issues. finally glad it threw a code. would be fast one second and the second time i hit the throttle it becomes a 325i... then back to roasting tires after that. all within 3 different times of flooring it back to back from 3k rpms.
