It only does it at partial load. If i apply full throttle, independent of revs, it does nothing.

I live in europe. I only use 98 octane.

well it's not vanos rattle, since it would do that in neutral. Did you check ur oil filter for shavings?

Could you guys hear the rattle/ticking sound on the driving video?
What do you think of it?
I've always thought it should be some kind of metal heat shield, but the sound has become louder and more frequent over time.

I have seen a few videos of Vanos rattle and it does not resemble any of those i have heard.

The last service was done about 5k kms ago at the bmw dealer. The rattle was present before and has remained.

I do have one (or more) brake dust shields that appear to rattle when i remove the wheels and try to move them around.
I always thought that was the cause. Do you believe it could still be?

My next step is to go to a shop. Lift the car and try to replicate the sound while someone could walk around to pinpoint it.
If that doesn't work, i'm going to a dyno. I'm sure there i'll be able to do it.

If you live in so cal you should bring the car to my home. I will diagnose it for you for free. And we can see everything else that's going on with her at the same time.

I found these videos where they say it is a blown head gasket.
The sound is exactly the same.
What do you think?

I would for sure, but my car is on the other side of the pond.

Thanks anyway

So have you run a compression test to confirm head gasket?

I haven't, but will do as soon as i get home. I'm the US right now.

I'm fairly confident i have the right diagnose by now because after watching videos and reading descriptions of headgasket failure it all matches my symptoms.

I have a slight fluttering idle sometimes.
The sound i hear is apparently called pinging and all descriptions of what conditions make it ping match with mine.

From M3cutters:

Greetings,

I've been suffering some mild pinking at low to medium loads (on the throttle) in almost any gear above 2nd between 2000 - 3000 RPM.

The pinking is much more noticeable when the engine is cold and going up a slight hill. When the engine warms up it is more pronounced during light to medium throttle e.g. Climbing up a hill on the motorway around 70MPH.

Things I've tried:

1. Different grades of fuel (Shell Saver, Shell Super, Texaco, Tesco Momentum....)
2. Changed spark plugs to NGK Iridium (previous were Bosch)
3. Compression test (un-calibrated gauge from what I can tell)

The compression test reveals that Cylinders 1 to 4 are all consistent with one another. Sadly though Cylinder 5 and 6 are both more than half the pressure lower than the other cylinders. When cranking the engine with the compression gauge in either 5 or 6 a noticeable sound of air escaping can be heard.

Question:

Is this a clear enough sign that the Head gasket has failed between cylinders 5 and 6?

Other potentially linked observations:

The engine is relatively quiet no tappet like sounds.
Idle is not as smooth as I'd expect from a 6 cylinder (my e36 325i coupe is dead smooth when idling), this M3 feels like it goes through short phases of deep rumbles and light missing during idling (what you might expect from an older diesel car).
Car starts first time with no issues, no engine light (MIL), misfire codes only appear if someone has red-lined the car in 1st gear not realising their in manual mode (SMG) (checked codes with INPA).
