Default 04 M3 ticking... Blown gasket/Block and Vanos tabs

I everyone!

My 2004 e46 M3 has been ticking under partial load. Especially on higher gears between 2 and 4k revs.
If i just accelerate slowly there is no ticking. If i floor it there is no ticking.
Only ticks (not always) under partial load and only between 2 and 4k revs.
Never in neutral.

I read a lot of people describing similar symptoms but never got to any conclusions.

I tried standing really close to the engine with the bonnet/hood open and asked my brother to hit the gas in every possible way to try and hear anything from the engine. Nothing at all.
Got real close to Vanos and nothing from there either.

But today.. only today.. with the car in neutral, i blipped the throttle to try and hear anything and i did!
If i blip it just right i hear what seems to be the exact same tick/click just once. Exactly as i hit the gas very sharply (sport mode helps).

Before i thought it could be the driveshaft, but now i feel it must be something else.

I'll probably take it to a dealership to have them diagnose, but as you may know, they will just start changing everything until they find what it was.
That would cost several thousands.

I don't mind paying for whatever will fix this, but trial and error at my expense... NO

Please Help

FYI.. the car has just 127k kms and has been very well taken care of. I rarely drive it hard and don't redline the engine.

Could be a million things...

Could be your vanos, itís been a while since I did the procedure but, there are these washers insides splines that rattle, beisan recommends replacing them with (s65 splines? Donít recall check the procedure) to reduce the the rattle.

There: http://www.beisansystems.com/procedu...ttle_procedure

It could be a heat shield.

So you thought it was only under partial load but now sounds like you get it in neutral too?

Can you definitely isolate it to front of car/engine compartment? Tick/click sound like knock or misfire? You have any recordings?

Shouldn’t the vanos rattle at any engine speed? Even in neutral?
It doesn’t rattle at all in neutral. What I heard was a single click/tick as it comes of idle if I blip the throttle hard.

It does appear to come from the engine compartment.
Before today I could only hear it while driving so it always seemed to come from the middle area. Transmission or driveshaft

I will try to make a video of it both while driving and that blip in neutral

Thank you for the help

Head gasket. Do a compression and leakdown test to be sure.

Check the easy stuff first. I had a tick/click and it was one of my pulleys. With the car off remove the belt and manually spin the pulleys and see if you can feel anything unusual. You can start the car too and listen as well, but only for 30 secs maybe as your water pump won't be spinning without the belt.

Sounds like engine pinging. I've heard a few cars do this. The blip off idle click and the full load up hills between 2-4k rpm. Are you using 91 with ethanol or 93?

Posted this in another thread, but does it sound like this:

It seems that through my laptop speakers i can't hear the ticking, but with headphones i can.

Please try that if you can't hear it.

Here's another video of it idling. Do you hear anything wrong? It has allways sounded like this and the ticking is recent.

Last video. In this one i tried to replicate the ticking sound in neutral, but i couldn't.
It actually only happened once.

I will try that. I have a new belt to change anyway.

Thank you
