Zaharias, you're right. I'm referring to the screws that connect the two parts shown in your photo. Incidentally, I think I've solved my problem, but thanks to those who offered help.

And how you did it, if this could be for help for any other in the same situation?

I was hoping no-one would ask that question because the answer is a little embarrassing. I went to HF and bought the correct size ( E-5) torx wrench! I had been using my old E-6 and rounded off the head of one screw, but the E-5 worked fine! All is locked down now, and I'll again run the vanos test to see what happens.

So I found an interesting "fix" to my issue which has greatly reduced the startup noise....

I changed the oil from Castrol TWS 10W60 to Liqui Moly 10W60.....

This was simply a planned oil change at 5-6000 mile. After a day of driving I noticed the car barely makes the rattle sound upon startup after sitting for 6+ hours.

Not saying it'll fix all your issues but my startup rattle is so quiet now it's not noticeable which seems normal to me!

Thanks for the input.
Keep as updated while you do some miles.
I also use Liqui Moly but know I have Pentosin since my mech was out of stock on LM.
I will try a used Vanos valve body as Raj said a valve may have some leak and report back.

LM has a slightly higher viscosity and a higher cold pour (not actually a good thing) than TWS, so that could be it. Maybe not ideal in cold climates, mind.

Keep in mind, the old oil has thinned out and the new stuff is at its best. Any perceived change may go away over time. Might be so slow you don't even notice.

Could this be a faulty Vanos pressure accumulator?
