UPDATE - CENTER SUPPORT BEARING

Posting this one for posterity in case anybody else experience these symptoms.

I was autocrossing my car this weekend. After about 15 runs, I heard an odd vibration noise shifting into second gear. It's almost like quick driving over rumble strips on the highway. But the car performed admirably on the rest of the course.

On the next run, the rumbling/thumping was more pronounced so I stopped running and examined the car. I couldn't see anything wrong (without jacking up the car) so I proceeded to recreate the noise.

It became apparent that the noise was specifically coming from under the shifter area. It also only appears in 1st and 2nd gear between 1,900 to 2,500 RPM. No noise in the other gears in all RPM ranges.

My suspicion was that it has something to do with the drive shaft. With consultation from some wrenchers at the autocross event, I drove it to my mechanics and dropped it off. It would not get attended to till a weekday.

Of course, I proceeded to do some quick searching and found this thread:

http://m3forum.net/m3forum//showthread.php?t=364291

OP's post indicated the same symptoms and the cause was due to a worn center support bearing.

I got a call and a text from my mechanic today and it turns our the cause for my thumping/noise was also due to a center support bearing. So a new part has been ordered and that is now being fixed. It's also a relatively cheap part, so I'd recommend inspecting it whenever you do your guibo.

The cost of that last update. I'm sure it's staggering. But I'm sure the car will look minty fresh once done.

Yeahhh... Could've definitely spent that on some awesome mods that I really want. But maintenance before mods

Here's some more photos of the work. Someone remind me I'm not crazy for doing this.

I can't speak to your mental state, as I'm struggling with my own debate regarding money for paintwork; in fact, you may be inspiring me for my own 'bare-wallet' situation.

However, I'm sure it'll look stunning once done!

Picked up the car this weekend and couldn't be more ecstatic.

Actually, I practically yanked the car out of Joe's hands because I had an autocross event. The car came out really great. No over sprays, no orange peeling. The rust is all gone and the previous repair to the fender has been fixed to perfection.

It'll be going back to Joe's for some final touch-ups here and there and some slight adjustments on the trunk. But I'm super happy with the car. The exterior is practically all caught up on maintenance. The last things for exterior maintenance and modifications are square wheels for autocrossing and the rear CSL diffuser.

Will try to snap up some better photos in better (less harsh) lighting.
