There are some really bad beers listed in this thread.

As was mentioned earlier, if you are just getting in to beer, a strong hopped beer is probably going to be a bit more of an acquired taste. Approach IPAs and Pale Ales with a little caution.

Anything in the wheat beer or amber, red or brown ales family with be a great place to start.

Since you live in LA, I think you should be able to find some high quality CA beers at a good beer store.

Check out
-Red Rocket Ale by Bear Republic
-Evil Dead Red by AleSmith
-Nautical Nut Brown Ale by AleSmith

I think Avery Brewing from Boulder is being distributed in CA by Stone. If you can find their Ellie's Brown Ale check it out for sure.

Amen to that.

Yeah, that irritates me greatly. No Russian River distribution out here. On the plus side, I'm a half hour from the Maryland location of Dogfish Head's restaurant, and I get all the Troeg's, Weyerbacher and Victory I can shake a stick at. Plus Smuttynose is semi-local.

Nice recs, haven't seen any of those. I had a year in the 'beer of the month club' last year (domestics package), but none of those ever came up.

Love Avery. Their IPA and that 'White Rascal' are two faves.

Yes, these are all readily available at Red Carpet Liquor in Glendale, or at the several Vendome locations. Others, too, I'm sure.
