Default Anyone else's K DCAN cable is like this?

The cable I got has a selector switch. Anyone else has one like this? What does it do?

Usually it just connects/disconnects pin 7 and 8.

Yes. Let's it work on multiple chassis types, depending on switch position.

... though mine mostly just gets moved without me noticing, causing my laptop to be able to connect periodically until I figure out what happened.

Ah ok, cause I'm in the process of trying to get diagnostic software and I don't want to look like an idiot when I go to buy a car and check out the codes and it doesn't work

E46 M3s require pins 7 and 8 to be connected, because there are two k busses. Newer cars don't require this. The switch allows you to use the cable on cars with or without the busses connected. The alternatives are soldering the pins or there is a M-F extender that has the pins connected.

Ah ok, so if it doesn't work in one switch it should work in the other switch.

Just gotta find some software now, got no real idea what to use. I had P.A. Soft before but as I understand that's more basic? I currently also have BMW TIS but that's only for torque specs and service manuals.

Because it's not K+DCAN.

Thank you. No idea why so many different things for only one purpose (finding errors)

When the switch is set to connect pins 7 and 8, the cable will work to provide access to the DME and the rest of the modules. If pins 7 and 8 aren't connected, only the OBD-II bus will be accessible so only the DME will be visible, not any of the other controllers. Pin 8 is the D bus, which is bridged to the K bus through the instrument cluster. You can see that CAN is used, but it's not accessible with the connector.

As for software, INPA or DIS will enable you to access all of the controllers, reading and resetting codes and actuating controller functions.
