Post How to Safely and Inexpensively Ship Items You're Selling

Many people are simply unaware that they can create shipping labels without the use of eBay -or-'s web site, and the additional creation/maintenance of an unnecessary accounts therein. This feature can save forum members money as no monthly fee is required to have an account with PayPal, of which the shipping payment is automatically deducted from the PayPal balance, and the functionality within PayPal is very much similar to the 'Click'n'Ship functionality provided by Even better is the fact that while does not allow you to ship domestically via first class mail, PayPal will allow you to ship via First Class online, with reduced expenditures for delivery confirmation (which should always be used) for all packages under 13 oz. (< 369 g)

The link to PayPal's page for this option is not publicly advertised, but can be found by navigating to this url:

  • This service, amongst others, saves you a trip to the post office, thus preventing unnecessary door ding damage to your prized ///M3.
  • Purchasing your shipping from the USPS provides a discount on almost all shipping types, from First Class to Priority to Express Mail.
  • This service is available to you regardless of whether you use the pre-existing PayPal shipping as default for your account.
  • This service can act as a back-up to metered or non-metered customary postage methods.
  • Delivery confirmation is automatically created and mailed to the recipient's eMail address when provided in the proper field, thus eliminating the necessity of sending such information manually, and reduces the retail cost of $0.75 to $0.18, and even more if purchasing the postage by traditional means at a USPS retail location.
  • This service allows you to send media mail or parcel post, which is not allowed by default from
  • This service can automatically update shipping costs for the weight and class based on shipping method.
  • Alternate shipping addresses can be provided within the return address field rather than defaulting to the PayPal provided return addresses should this be necessary.
  • Postal code validation is provided in the event the postal code does not properly match the recipient's city or address.
  • The correct costs are properly calculated when weight is entered.
  • Insurance is available up to $500.00 USD.
  • Printed lables work with a 1/2 sheet of 8.5" x 11" printer paper for easy affixation to parcels.
  • Postage is shown in your PayPal logs and monthly reports.

  • This method does not allow international first class mail to be created, you must choose priority or express mail services.
  • The address must be manually populated, as it is not populated from the PayPal address fields (this isn't a problem if the shipment is pre-paid).
  • Delivery confirmation can not be disabled.
  • The software will provide a label with a bar code - you MUST have the bar code visible on your parcel.
  • Labels are designed to be printed on a half sheet of 8.5" x 11" printer paper, and though they can be trimmed, they may still be too large for some packages.
  • Domestic first class mail parcels must be at least 0.75" thick to qualify for delivery confirmation - this is easily circumvented by placing a small amount of additional packing within the package.
  • Will not allow domestic first class letters to be pre-paid.
  • Some services normally available via, such as those requiring registration, to be added.
  • This service will not allow over $500.00 USD insurance and the sender will not be able to add additional insurance at a later time at the post office.

  • Purchase 8.5" x 11" sheets of adhesive-backed paper to print labels and familiarize yourself with how your printer arranges print while the paper is trayed.
  • Purchase a digital scale - even the Harbor Freight 11 lb. scale or 70 lb. scale will be accurate enough for postage freight and will pay for itself after the first 5-6 shipments!
  • Be diligent with sending your packages in a timely fashion and your feedback from other users will improve tremendously, never forget to send a delivery confirmation number via eMail - it's an automated service, so use it!
  • Free supplies for Priority Mail can be ordered online from this link provided by the Simply order those boxes or padded envelopes that suit what you may be shipping and pay nothing! Delivery time can range from one to two weeks, typically.
  • While you can obviously leave many appropriately-sized packages in your mailbox with the flag raised (or whatever device is appropriate), do be cautious about leaving your outbound mail for too long as this is an opportunity many fraudsters look to capitalize upon.
