Well shit. One of my all time faves and a guy whose songs I grew up listening to and learning how to play on guitar. Recently got to hear the master of Learning to Fly at a studio and I was reminded how relevant that guy stayed in the 80s (and 90s) when forst New Wave, and later Hair Metal, and later “Alternative” became way more popular than his countrified rock was. He was among the first of the old guard to recognize how a good video was a great tool, but his songs didn’t need any window dressing.

Don’t Come Around Here No More, The Waiting, Refugee, Learning to Fly, his Wilburys work, and on and on. Such a freaking shame.

Someone edited his Wikipedia page saying he died today...but yeah I heard he's still barely alive.

Just read the news as well, TMZ has reported that the decision was made to pull him off life support but no official “R.I.P.” yet although they say sources close to him weren’t talking... sadly i think we all know what means .

He had so many great songs whether it was with the Heartbreakers, Solo or with other artists like Stevie Nicks. Mary Jane’s Last Dance, Don’t Come Around Here No More, Free Fallin’... so many of his songs were and are great. A legendary and solid artist for sure!

My all time favorite american artist. A legend. Loved his music ever since I heard "I won't back down" for the first time.

Tom Petty has always been admired by the majority of the big musicians of the 90s. He earned the respect of everybody around, and deservedly so.

Every time I hear Full Moon Fever, I still laugh at his skit/joke halfway through the full moon fever cd, were here acknowledged those that were listening to a cassette or record and needed to stand up or do something to go flip over and listen to the B-side.

RIP

I love that too. Taking a moment so those listening on cassette could flip it over.

Learning to Fly is my all time favorite. I don't think I ever change the channel or skip songs when I hear it.

Interesting (to me) bit about that song and the 'master' I heard of it earlier this year... it was at a facility where they remaster, digitize, and otherwise manipulate studio recordings. Often, they receive master multitrack tapes without engineers' notes, and that happened with Learning to Fly.

The tracks were labeled however; guitar, bass, guitar 2, vocals, etc. The audio guru we were talking to said he noticed one track labeled 'Cup' and brought everything down. It's a percussion noise, and he finally got in touch with the producer or engineer, and the sound is in fact a cup being rapped on a desk in the studio. He isolated it for us by dropping everything out of the mix but the cup, then pulled everything back up to the final version's levels. Then he pulled the cup out, and it just sounds wrong. Cannot unhear it. Hearing the song come out of a real studio's speaker system was just unbelievable.

Lyrics for the song are a little sadder today. Hope that he turns for the better, but it doesn't look good. Hope he and his family aren't suffering.

That is pretty damn cool. Would love to have experienced that.

Was that album recorded at Sound City on that crazy board that Dave Grohl now owns or somewhere else?
