E46 doesn't monitor the license plate lights

^My old 323 did, but I have no warning with the current LED bulbs in place. I remember hearing they changed it with newer models, so I'm guessing the M3 doesn't get the error.

They seem to have gotten rid of it with the newer (2002+) LCMs for some reason. The function is there, but the software's set so that it's disabled for all E46s. So 2001 cars will possibly get an error, unless they retrofitted a newer LCM.

Makes me wonder if BMW initially intended to install LEDs on newer E46s

Just took a few pictures. Quality isn't the best but you get the idea.
The LED license plate lights turn off as soon as you turn the switch to off.

Stock bulbs

DDM 36mm 2x5050 LEDs and Stock bulb

DDM 36mm 2x5050 LEDs

DDM 36mm 4x5050 LEDs

Interesting point.

Here are the pictures I promised. These are the 39mm DDM bulbs with 3 LEDs. Ordered them at the same time as some LED reverse lights, came out under $30 total.

This is after the car and lights are off. Happens when I open the doors or trunk and when I turn off the ignition. (please excuse the dirty car)

And finally with them on. They are a crisp white, practically no blue.

Looks like I picked the right ones. The 2x5050 is a nice white light and looks to be similar brightness as OEM which is what I wanted. The 4x5050 seems to be too bright...
