There is a very comprehensive SMG manual published on the net, it explains also how the system assist the driver during shifting on uphill or downhill.

There is another case I've found the system behaves differently. After cold start it won't upshift bellow 2000rpm even on flat road where a car at normal temperature would upshift at 1500rpm. I guess that's rather a feature that should allow for coolant and oil to reach normal operative temperature faster.
