This is a misconception and a community rumor.
We should really help each other stop spreading it.
It may have a different PN, but it's not stronger.
The RACP on a vert has extra support from the rag top bulkhead (also shown in one of Reedish's excellent videos), but isn't stronger in itself.

Otherwise I agree that a later model is generally "better".

I do see where the notion started. If look on RealOEM, the rear axle support part number used to be 41007030266, and if you look up the cross references, that part number applies to every E46 *except* the M3 convertible. That part is now ended, and everything, including the M3 convertible, shows the new part number 41117000246

Do we know for certain the panel isn't made of a higher grade steel?

"rare" for a reason.

Not saying that this is; but you could have gotten any color interior/exterior back in the day through the BMW Individual program.

And the fact that it's the base model. Oh, and it's an '02 so it's prone to more problems than the later production runs.

Any help or numbers would be much appreciated! Like 1,000 were made in this combo, or 100, etc..
DONT BUY THIS CAR. I created a thread on this about a month ago. Its has been repainted, poorly may I add.

No, at least I don't know. But I do believe the separate PN could just be BC different preparation.
Here is the video I mentioned. From 1 minute in:
