Default E46 to E92?

Hey fellas,

Ive been really really itching to sell my E46 M3. I have an 03.5 Smg with about 100k. The car has been very well maintained and is paid off. I am absolutely in love with it but recently Ive become fed up with the issues. Last summer my exhaust hub broke and then the gear position sensor for the smg went out dropping me into neutral at random. With the subframe issues, vanos problems, and smg that they are notorious for, I just dont want to deal with it anymore. I have contemplated doing a swap but have since reconsidered. I feel that I can pull a good amount of money out with the car along with the various mods I have: Brembos, BBS, Dinan and so on.

For the guys that have made the switch have you guys regretted it? I have been eyeing the E92 down for a while now. This past weekend I attended mpact east and that really settled the deal for me. I love the look, sound and just the E92 all around. My plan would be to sell the E46, invest the money into my business for a short amount of time, and then in a year or so purchase an E92. I'd really love to hear the thoughts from guys who have made the jump. I don't want to make a rash decision and regret it since this car has more sentimental value to me than the money its worth.

In the coming days/weeks I am hoping to stop at the dealer and test drive the E92.

Thanks

Default Re: E46 to E92?

I have a 2013 6MT E92 and two E46s.

Compared to my E46 M3 the E92 is relatively boring to drive. But sometimes the light clutch and comfort (EDC is awesome) is wonderful. E92 is much preferred by passengers. It does the "all around" car much better than the E46. Compared to today's cars the E46 now feels like a raw sports car, though at the time it too was supposed to be an "all around" car.

The numbers don't lie as to which car I prefer:

In the last year

2002 M3 SMG ~8K miles
2006 M3 6MT ~6K miles
2013 M3 6MT 1340 miles

I would get a 2006 6MT. I have a 2006 E46 6MT and it has a fraction of the issues of my 2002 SMG. On the 2002 something is always needing to be fixed or replaced.

I went from an E46 to an E92 3 years ago.
I don't regret the decision AT ALL.
The E92 is a better car in every single way.
Don't misunderstand, E46 is a fantastic car but the E92 is more engaging, it is faster, it is more capable as an "all-around" car, it is more reliable. It is a better car.
Best decision for you would be to just keep the E46 and buy an E92. That is the only regret I have!

Keep your paid off E46.

Smartest move is to keep a paid off vehicle and invest that money somewhere else such as savings, traveling, or whatever.

I wouldn't swap out unless I could afford a low mileage example of an E92 M3.

I went from an M3, but to an '09 335. Even in the downgrade I do think daily driving, the E92 is a better car. Just in every single way.

The M3 feels better, connects to me better, but for putting 50 miles a day on in traffic and stupid low speed limits, the E92 works better. I would assume the same holds true for the E92 M3.

I think next year I will see how the E92 M3 does. But I hope that it won't be my DD

I just went from an '03 E46 M3 SMG to an '11 E92 M3 ZCP DCT. The E46 seemed more fun to drive, but the E92 seems more capable, and the electronics (stereo gps etc) are night and day compared to the E46. The DCT is way better, as is the overall handling (I have EDC), but I still kind of miss the S54. Having said that, the S65 is definitely a better engine (power and sound), but loves gas. I too was getting tired of all the little things that were going wrong with my old car (was up to 150k).

Although I miss certain aspects, I am very happy with my switch to the E92. I'm taking it on the track in a few weeks, so how it compares to the E46...
