Default Need Advice: Wait for new M4 or buys used M3

Hi all

I am new to this forum and would like some expert opinions. I just got a raise and have been thinking about getting an M3 for a while. I would be buying a used M3 around 2012 model. Is it better to wait for new M4 ( waiting is hard)? Plus I have heard there tend to be a few glitches in the newer model anyway. What would you all advise?

Thanks a ton.

Had a 328i 2008, BMS throttle mod( not much)

Welcome to m3f.

Perhaps you could share your criteria for 'better'?

The E9x is a known quantity, with a proven design and minimal issues at the end of the model run. The range (expect 200 miles between fill ups) sucks, but the NA V8 screams to a 8,300 RPM redline. The car is heavy, elegantly comfortable, and well equipped. It is deceptively fast when you spin it up. Fortunately, from 09 to 13 there were minimal changes, so any recent model year car, really, in good condition, serviced regularly, that passes a rigorous PPI would be a good bet.

Hard to say what the M4 will bring exactly, but it will be a very high performance vehicle. It is typically unwise to buy any BMW in it's first year or two of beta test (sorry, meant new model production ) if higer reliability is desired.

Good luck and congrats on the raise.

I 100% agree with MMME30W. The only thing I would add is this. If you're at all familiar with the differences between NA and Forced Induction cars, you'll have to make a decision yourself between which will suit your needs. In my opinion, the E9X fulfills all my expectations as an M/// car. I've had the pleasure of owning 5 since 2008. Two DCT's, and three 6MT's. My current track car is an 09'. Which I've been running for two years without issue. Wear and tear components are the only thing that have been replaced. Very happy with the reliability and performance of the car. So my advice to you would be, buy a used E9X now. Trade in a couple of years for the M4. Or you'll never know how good the E9X is.

The new M4 is set to debut very soon, I would wait and see what the details are.

Wait man.

It's going to be lighter and actually make torque.

Have you test driven an e92 M3? If not I suggest you do, then you can decide whether you really like that car or if there are other motivations clouding your decision.

IMO, it doesn't have to be either or. You can do both. I would not buy the M4 during the first model year. Let BMW work out the glitches, which there will be a few. If you like the e92, why not buy a slightly older ('09-'10, maybe CPO) where the cost of entry is lower and enjoy for a few years. When the new M4 comes out you can determine if it warrants the upgrade. As far as M cars go, these will be fairly different. NA V8 vs. I6 TT. I can tell you that the I6 TT in the new M4 will likely be a better street car due to the availability of torque. The S65 is amazing, but it has to be revved up to feel the power. Both will exhibit razor sharp handling, obviously.

At the end of the day, if you like the e92 I would go ahead and buy one (just maybe one that is further along in it's depreciation curve). The e92 is a known commodity, the new M4 is not. It will be great, no doubt but not everyone will like it.

Come tell me that and I'll put you in your place. People who say that probably haven't driven one and just like magazine racing.

It has enough torque, a pretty flat and broad torque curve. I've driven S50/2 and S54 cars. The S65 has more than enough grunt down low coming from an E36 M. Unless you are coming from a big block V8 you don't know what torque is, your not going to miss it. I'm not a turbo fan, doesn't suit my preference, I prefer the high revving screaming N/A V8.

OP: Only you can answer that question, it depends on what you are looking or. If you plan to keep it for a long time, I'd say go with the 2012 or 2013 M3 because it's the last N/A V8 BMW will make. If you are a 3-4 year lease it and then return it, warranty loving and wanting to have the latest things before everyone else type of person. Then the M4 might be worth waiting for.

What do you consider "Soon"? BMW is supposed to debut the production version in early 2014, meaning we wont be seeing deliveries till late 2014 early 2015.

Ahh, you're right I misremembered.

"The M4 concept will be unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance that starts August 17th."

So it's just a concept, but still I think op should wait as I'm sure they'll spill a few details with the this unveiling and we can all get a better idea on the aesthetics.

LMAO...

E46 M3 has even less torque. Like the S2000 and NSX. Nada.

Our E92 M3 has better performance numbers over a 1999-2004 Ferrari 360 Modena. Thats a fact. Its not too shabby.
