I guess you're right, it IS silly to ask about this considering that this isn't like, cartalk, but a fan forum. I was hoping for some point of views from people who have experience with how BMWs hold up over time, since my e46 is 10 years old. Sorry about being snippy, it was the end of a long day.

I've owned an e46 Vert, and now have an e92. I like the e92 in alot of ways more than the e46, overall a better car and much more "upscale". I couldn't imagine going back into the e46 - non of the materials wear well over time, and rattles on the vert....oh the rattles. Maybe an engine performance tune or some small mods may help the e93 get out of it's own way. It's heavy.

But I also understand I'm not comparing apples to apples here...hopefully this helps.

Keep the e93, IMO - Looks better too.

e9X section will get e9X biased answers-- people here inherently prefer the e9X.

I prefer the e46-- I like the interior better, I like the exterior better, and I like the driving experience significantly more. Which isn't to say I think it's a better car, as better is in the eye of the beholder. The e9X is certainly faster and more comfortable/isolated. You wouldn't be the first person who's gone from e46 to e9X and then back to e46 again. For that matter, people often go e36 to e46 and then back to e36 again. And few people would argue the e36 is better than the e30. Tastes differ.

I would not be afraid of the e46 because it's 10 years old. The e46 has two issues than can be significant (subframe and vanos), and if you enjoy DIYing (which you said you did) you can lock down both of them forever for <$1000 total. I, too, bought my e46 new and plan to sell it never, so I do every permafix out there.

All that said, an e90 M3 may be in my future as a family car/comfort cruiser. I want something that drives smaller than an M5 as I find it annoying when pushed. But... as a supplement to the e46, not a replacement.

I have an E46 M3 6MT 'vert, low miles 2006
and a 2013 E92 M3 coupe 6MT ZCP
and a E46 M3 coupe SMG

My E46 M3 coupe is so much faster than my E46 'vert. The E46 coupe is fun as hell to drive (it's my favorite car to be in when I'm by myself) but is really uncomfortable and has rattles, I feel bad for passengers when I have them.

To be honest the E46 M3 'vert is a bit of a disappointment to me. It has the E46 M3 uncomfortable ride once I get into the city but it is just not fast. It's quick, but compared to the coupe, it's definitely not fast. Plus the rasp/exhaust works on the coupe but in the convertible they've made the engine relatively quiet and the exhaust just sounds awful unless you're in a tunnel. If I had to do it over again I might have looked more closely at LCI 335i 'vert for the price range I was in. Sacrilege, I know, but I feel the 'M' treatment works incredibly well for the E46 M3 coupe but not so much for the 'vert.

I would take a E93 M3 in a heartbeat if I was shopping for an only car. I've always preferred 6MT in the E9X but would get DCT to mitigate the 'verts slowness. I think E93 M3 DCT would be my 'only' car (though tempted by SL63 AMG for the same role) if I had to choose one.. I love top down driving and it is just a sweet, sweet car that sounds amazing all the time. EDC makes the car so comfortable.

I still have both, E46 Coupe and E93. I keep may cars 'til they die. I enjoy both of them and I wouldn't want to get rid of either. But, if I had to choose which is the better car, the E93 may be heavier but it is quicker and faster (stock vs. stock)
