Default Another Dafoe VANOS Fix

This past weekend, I had Dave (dafoe) come over and help me with my 90k mile maintenance and VANOS bulletproofing. I've got a 2005 SMG car that was at 90116 miles when we did the work. Oil is changed every 5-6k miles, rarely driven hard - just the occasional spirited back road drive. Car had no symptoms indicating anything was wrong.

The good news was that I only had 3 valves out of spec. The bad news was what we found when we popped the cover off. Pics below!

We put in an OEM hub, Beisan disk, Beisan seals, Beisan solenoid, updated cam bolts, and an oem chain guide.

Thanks again, Dave!

Nice and clean, no gunk and very little build-up:

But sadly, exactly what I was hoping not to see:

Having done this a hundred times, Dave new to catch that tab with a magnet so it didn't go off on an adventure:

Curse you BMW:

Out with the bad:

Timing chain guide wear:

New bolts in:

Unsurprisingly, the car ran a lot smoother with some new spark plugs:

How long did this take you guys? I'd like to do mine soon and I'm in central VA. Might have to come up to my old stomping grounds in DTF if Dave has some free time one weekend.

What do the tabs actually do? What's their purpose?

We started just after 9am. I already had the car on jack stands when he showed up, but hadn't done anything else. We finished somewhere around 3/3:30 with no breaks, thanks to his immense knowledge of this job.

They slot into and turn the oil pump disk in the VANOS, which provides the oil pressure the VANOS needs to function correctly.

Ha! I was in it for the knowledge just as much as the repair, so I followed along the whole time, helping where I could.

I'm about to be in the same position, I'm wondering if I should buy a spare hub in case a tab is broken. Worst case is I sell it on ebay and lose a few bucks while avoiding down time.

Did Dave have a spare around?
