The fact these will sell like hotcakes, but the 3 series wagon doesn't and BMW doesn't even sell the 1 series hatchbacks over here at all depresses me as a car enthusiast... but I'm sure that's not a startling revelation to anyone, is it?

Anyhow, this and the related current gen X1 are the first FWD BMW sold in North America, right? (No, I'm not counting Mini Cooper, sorry). I'm surprised there isn't more enthusiast uproar. Perhaps all the other stupid stuff BMW's released as of late has killed people's faith in BMW trying to preserve it's heritage, and a FWD hatchback on stilts doesn't seem as crazy as it once would have. I couldn't imagine the BMW "of old" even conceiving of a car like this, let alone building one, but "modern" BMW doing it doesn't really surprise me.

BMW isn't in business for preserving their heritage. They are a car company and would sell their mother to achieve their profit number... FWD? That's nothing...

In this sorority girl segment I donít see the value in this over the X1 (which actually looks pretty good in M trim). Cheaper and roomier and better looking (imo). But I suppose the exact same argument holds for all even numbered Xs vs their +1 odd counterparts.

I've driven the X1 and X2. Got to drive the X2 on an autocross course at a BMW X event today. They are based on the same platform, but they are quite different. The X1 is more roomy but also is quite frumpy and boring. The X2 is not as roomy, but it's more nimble and sporty, which it should be, since it's shorter, lower and more stiffly suspended. I'm close to pulling the trigger on an X2. It grates on me racking up miles and spending 8-10 hours per week in my M3 in bumper to bumper traffic, not to mention sucking down 94 octane at 1.72 per litre. The X2 will be great for the commute.

Ordered this in April, drove it home today. It's an X2 M Sport X, with almost every available option. Now my M3 will become a garage queen instead of slogging through traffic every day.
