Ravenol is looking like a solid backup plan at a reasonable price.

That makes no sense. Why would BMW approve the use of an incompatible fluid? If they publish a TIS then you know it will work.

My theory is BMW is reacting to the dealers wasting it all by accidentally filling M-DCT's with MTF-2. Which results in a new DCT trans for the customer. So to simplify things, BMW is going with one fluid for manuals and DCTs.

Again...just a theory I pulled out of my butt.

There's a different between "compatible" and "best".

The fact that for over a decade they sold both (and only stopped because it became NLA) implies to me that the DCT fluid is not as good in the MT as the MTF2.

Nor was it just out of laziness before-- these cars got launched on LT1, later got bumped to LT2. And the continued to make another manual trans fluid, for newer cars, after that (LT3).

Agreed. But let's not kid ourselves...BMW and the dealers probably don't care much about the E46s any longer. So the lack of MTF2 isn't really much of a concern.

Have you tried O'Reilly's? I can get any OE BMW fluid at my local store. Might have to wait a day for some things.

I've stockpiled 24 bottles of MTF2 for myself at this point

Lol...nice!

I just run MT90 and change it every 6 months in my track car. Thank god for the Motive Power Fill...makes refilling easy.

For whatever it's worth, despite popular belief, I'm pretty sure Pentosin MTF2 was *not* the same as BMW's MTF-LT2. Their discontinuation of the product likely has little bearing on what BMW will be filling their transmissions with. I could be wrong, but I could have sworn it was Castrol or something.

But it also seems like you can get the Pentosin stuff through Hyundai with part numbers 00232-19041 and 00232-19042

Strange conincidence of LT2 being NLA from bmw after pentosin discontinued MTF2, then...

Did BMW NLA it? On ECS seems like you can still buy the 12 pack of BMW brand MTF2?

Could be an error though and you might not be able to order it any longer.

Is it NLA? I wouldn't be surprised if they're phasing out the 5L bottles for the 1L bottles
