Default Re: Pentosin MTF2 Discontinued

Also noticed that the BMW MTF-LT-2 83220309031 part number on ECS Tuning is the 5 liter container, which is shown as back ordered, ended 11/17/2015. The current BMW part number 83222339219 is the 1 liter container. ECS tuning only sells this in a 12 pack and the price per liter is pretty outrageous considering the only difference is packaging.

Found this...

FFL-4 recently replaced MTF-LT-2 for older manual transmissions. FFL-4 and MTF-LT-2 are both 75W80 fluids with almost identical properties. Because of this changeover FFL-4 can be used in manual transmissions that required MTF-LT-2 manual trans fluid.

Here is a video about this:
My theory is they had this conversation:

A: We aren't selling much MTF2 anymore. I think we should cancel it and offer only FFL-4.
B: Yah, but we've been saying all along that MTF2 and FFL-4 were different fluids for different applications. How will we get around that?
A: Let's make a youtube video talking about a couple of tests that make them sound compatible...

The expression on that guy's face proves your theory.

I wonder if BMW published a bulletin on using FFL4 as a substitute. That would answer the question.

Since BMW has not discontinued MTF-LT-2, I would be surprised.

Yeah I'm in NZ - got 2 litres from a local dealer a couple of months ago - lucky that they had it in local stock. The other dealer in town didn't have any in stock and said it was unavailable from BMW Europe.

Dunno what I'll do next time...

I don't care if they do. They have been distinct fluids for a decade, just because they want to make life easier for themselves now doesn't make it so.

Ravenol is looking like a solid backup plan at a reasonable price.
