Last year I was made to replace my ZKW headlights as they did not have DOT inscription on them. Inspector was semi cool and asked me if I still had the originals then told me to just put them back on and bring it back in.

As for the OBDII receptacle that's a completely new one. Never had that issue and in fact the inspectors I had knew what year/model my car was by looking at it (96/m3).

Could be you had a goofy inspector. Where in NoVA are you? I used a place in Leesburg (Shell at Market & Plaza) and I believe there's another poster here (Incubus?) that had friendly one to use in Purcelville.

Be careful though with the red no pass sticker they put on (I think you get a week?)....it's another magnet for the ever so lovely NoVA officers....
Yes indeed, the Shell station in Purcellville has a real nice guy that never gave me any grief in 4 years. He doesn't really look at too much other than lighting. I've since moved to Fairfax though.

i dont even want to get into how anal Hawaii state safety inspections are....

if you think ANY of the 48 states is bad... go to Hawaii, and try to get a safety inspection with ANY mods....

I always had to go to the "hook up" places, and throw them a little extra on top to "help" me out

OK so sorry I was away. I posted originally when I was using my phone at the airport.

I have no CATs on my E36 and when I moved to VA I was worried about passing emissions. Luckily, I have O2 sims so no check engine light, and safety wise my car was perfectly fine. All lights on the car MUST be working. This includes foglights. So if your foglights don't work just pop them out of the car for the inspection.

Long story short I work with a Vietnamese fellow who has a buddy with a shop. I went to the gas / inspections station and the guy started my car, gave it a once over and then slapped a sticker on it. Granted I had just passed PA emissions and safety so I think he assumed the car was 'OK' already and my friend from work helped get things done fast.

Go to sleazy shops for these types of tests if you are trying to get away with something. Enthusiast type shops will nickel and dime you. Watch the guys when they look at your car though so they don't mess anything up. Once you have the sticker, drive away and never go back Some shops just want to get paid and careless about your car.

NOVA stinks with all this kind of stuff - you'll just have to get use to it. I am use to it because eastern PA is very similar in rules. Also I recommend learning to do some DIYing as it will save you lots of cash since you own an E36.

Good luck.

And I thought Maryland sucked, I guess the only good thing is it will help force you to do some routine maintinance. You should see some of the poor bastards that go into the emission stations once every two years. Thank goodness for sims on obdII no roller test for me!

No front plates in TN - FTW

Maybe I'll get an airbrush plate that says "I heart my M"
