Default E36 alternator DIY?

Got the old alternator out, but what do I need to release the tension from the belt? I popped the cap off the tensioner but can't seem to get the tension released.

SOB. Just found a huge tear in the elbow after the HFM. Is it time to do the ASC delete and get a new elbow?
