Default Re: My OEM+ Interlagos

Now I'm caught up to current day.

April 2019: Much needed steering wheel refresh.

Background: The car is a ZCP but one of the previous owners swapped the OEM alcantara for a leather wheel or it was spec'd with leather from the factory. Then, the guy I bought the car from wanted cruise control functionality and retrofitted the standard top trim with all the multi-function buttons.

Present day: I planned to find a "close enough" paint match and re-spray the trim myself. There are multiple internet examples of people trying to match Titan Shadow trim. I did not match it perfectly but the result is a pleasing color to my eyes and it doesn't look out of place since there's no other Titan Shadow trim in the car to clash with. I settled on Duplicolor Perfect Match Storm Gray. I retained the standard multifunction buttons (as much as I wanted to go back to OEM ZCP) but having cruise control is a "nice to have" and the retrofit involved some wiring I didn't care to remove at this time.

My starting point: Not bad, but not great.

Badge removed with heat and an Xacto. Now you see the horror of worn Titan Shadow!

Eyeing paint shades. This was not it; ended up going with a touch more bronze.

Lower trim stripped using acetone. Tip: the black is factory primer - remove it as well or you'll see lines after primer. Acetone did not react with the lower trim, however, the upper ZCP trim is ABS plastic and DID start to melt/smear. Had to sand that one.

Midway through color-sanding. This is when I realized how far off the color actually was. However, without having a new trim piece on hand, I'm not sure how faded and/or dirty the original Titan Shadow is. But again, I wasn't going for perfect. If I was, I'd buy a new piece of trim.

Last color coat before final color sand and clear. Definitely orange peel you need to sand down, but I prefer a bit of texture.

Sent my original wheel to Coby Wheel for gray alcantara. Prompt service within a week and quality result!

End result

New wheels from the Apex group buy. These will be for HPDE and because I've always wanted a set.

Tires are Hankook R-S4 265/35-18 square.

Next item is non-car related, but garage related. I enjoy making my own little space as much as wrenching on the car and it was time to tackle the bare drywall. Priming every wall and painting was no small task, and I loathe painting. But the result was worth the effort.

Everyone out of the garage. I stared at these two for awhile. E46 front end still takes the cake for me.

Done!

Now I need a place to store the OEM ZCP wheels. Wall mount wheel rack coming soon...

Picking up where I left off... wheel rack was built.

Stained and mounted with 12 lag bolts. Ladder sat there for a bit because I was paranoid and questioning my stud finding.

NC inspection time. Tint from previous owner was illegal (13% on rear windows). Perfect reason to rip it out. Aesthetically, I prefer no tint. For removal, I used a garment steamer and the side windows peeled off with relative ease and no residue (this isn't so bad...I thought)

Rear quarter window: tint peeled off in 30 seconds. Wow, this is amazing, I thought... Wait, why is the window still tinted??! Ohhhhhh, some numb-nut decided to apply tint on top of tint (because "tints" - plural). That means the top layer of tint peeled off the clear film of the bottom layer. Double the work! Sweet! It still wasn't too bad, but clearly the car lost about 5 lbs from this.

50/50 - let there be light!

Back to the OEM fishbowl. Feels good.

Also....slowly collecting parts for rod bearing overhaul.

Looks great, I want to do the same to mine with it's 30/15% tint. Debating getting a steamer like you or paying a tint shop 'cause I loathe that type of work. I envision it ripping and coming of in tiny shreds lol.

I will never attempt to remove tint after removing the side window tint on my E36...I decided not to touch the rear window tint lol.

On my street car, I have an 80% tint because I wanted UV protection while retaining the tint-less look. Turned out great imo.

If you peel the thicker, clear film away from the tinted film layer it will start to shred. The key is to not do that! Mine started to tear but I carefully pulled the pieces evenly until the tearing stopped. You should honestly try it on the side windows yourself before paying a shop. I'd never done this before. You might be surprised how easy it is (assuming the tint is of higher quality).
