Default Rich smell almost like burning rubber/newspaper

Hi,

i have a 2010 bmw m3 e92 with these modifications - dinan free flow exhaust, dinan ecu tune, dinan transmission tune, and dinan carbon fiber intake.

So its been a couple months where i have been experiencing a weird burning smell. It is most common during hard acceleration or going up a hill. I talked to a bmw service advisor and he mentioned that the smell should be common because of the ecu tune. He explained that with all dinan tunes, there is a modification to the amount of gas being burnt (an increase of gas to the engine), and sometimes it is left unburnt causing the smell.

I am kind of skeptical about it. Its a really strong smell and i do not know whether the advisor is telling the truth or there is the possibility of something else malfunctioning.

Side note: I heard that it may be the valve cover gasket, but i checked for obvious leaks and there are none. The service advisor also said it is rare for valve cover gasket changes on the s65 engine.

Anybody else experiencing the same problem? Any tips or advices for me to check for?

I'd go with the oil leak theory.

Thanks for your response.

So maybe there is a little oil leaking on the exhaust manifold? I tried looking for obvious leaks but have not really seen anything obvious.

Is there a way to test if its the oil leaking?

Thanks in advance.

A drop of oil can get blown or drip onto the exhaust pipe. Could be from the valve cover, could be from the oil cap, could be from the power steering reservoir or lines, could be the oil pan gasket, could be the oil pan drain plug. When a tiny leak burns off, it can be hard to find. You have to look for traces, like oil residue or a drip line. I'd be searching around the engine compartment and looking at the car from underneath. You may even have to remove the aluminum under tray.
