And we just released this...

Not ideal for a daily-driver only/business-meeting car, but if you're looking for track-focused, dual-duty, very lightweight/durable and serious volume at a great price, there's always the new BimmerWorld/MagnaFlow Exhaust - Race Version:

MPE for me. I've tried a few others but nothing satisfied like the MPE.

@OP: It really depends upon what you want the exhaust to do for the car.

If you are after performance, certain exhausts cater to toward that end.

If you are after a particular exhaust note other exhausts offer a wide selection.

However, there is no exhaust that delivers the most increase in performance and at the same time gives your car a near exotic car exhaust note.

Suggestion: listen to a few in the car and outside. Maybe you get opportunities to ride along or follow some with aftermarket exhausts.

Another vote for the OEM bypass muffler mod w/ EAS 80mm tips.

I have heard them all (in person), and IMO everything else is a waste of thousands of dollars. The OEM bypass mod sounds epic. Not so obnoxiously loud or muscle car raspy, but also not quiet by any means. It has the most exotic tone out of any aftermarket exhaust, and with DCT the rev matching downshifts are intoxicating. I was looking for a reason to spend more money on a different exhaust, and there is not anything I have heard that beats it.

The only downfall is that it does not reduce any weight like some of the lighter options out there. But then again it is only $300 - $400!

If I really wanted to spend more money and had to choose a different setup, I would say the Challenge sport X pipe paired with Meisterschaft GT would be my next choice. This combo will be a little lighter, and the high flow cats will give you a bit more HP. This combo is also very exotic sounding.

Akra exhausts are beautiful, but I just can't see how people think they sound good. I think of a tin can when I hear one. IPE sounds terrible, it's just brutally loud with no refinement. SuperSprint is a favorite of mine for the e46 platform, and although they have an outstanding product, I don't think they sound amazing on the E9X. M performance (MPE) sounds a little to much like a muscle car to me.

If you want serious power my vote goes for either American tri-stepped Racing headers/X-Pipe or Bimmerworld Headers/X-pipe with Akrapovic axleback exhaust...or just go full American Racing. No cats and no resonators = BIG POWER!

Thanks me later.

Jesus christ, that sounds ridiculously good. Not sure if I've been sensitised to sound due to my Tesla, but I'm yearning for some V8 these days. How much does the exact setup in that video cost? I'm very curious as my E46 might be replaced by an exotic, but I might just grab an E92 and call it a day since it really has much of what I'm looking for and that second clip just sounds like pure awesomeness.

Best is subjective, and the "best" exhaust really depends on your budget and the sound you like.

Why don't you remove the front cats first which will give you the majority of Perf gain and then see how the stock system sounds.
