Default Re: My $8.8K 176K mile Craigslist E36M3 Journey Begins

More on the oil starvation problem with US spec E36 M cars...... this is exactly what I experienced today.... pretty sad it comes from the factory like this:::: Might investigate accusump.

"What is the tapping noise near the top of my engine?
A. The tapping noise is often attributed to the hydraulic lifters in a low oil condition. Oil starvation also occurs during prolonged hard turns and is pronounced with an initial low oil state. Detailed oil starvation occurrences and solutions have been outlined below thanks to Edgar Bernard who spoke with Gregg Forde, chief mechanic of PTG (edited). The US M3 engine will have oil starvation problems on left handed, high G corners at limited duration (roughly 10 seconds). It is a combination of oil starvation and oil foaming. A temporary remedy is to put 1 to 1-1/2 quarts of extra oil in the crankcase during track events. The E36 M3 engine does not experience the same problems as the E30 M3 engine when the oil is over filled. (The E30 M3 engine will blow or leak oil out of the rear engine seal if too much oil is used.) A low cost fix to the problem is to install the M3 Lightweight oil pan/pump kit. The kit has two pickup points in the oil pan and is indeed tricked. PTG has the kit for around $1600 with the gasket (should be under $100). The US M3 engine produces approximately four bars of oil pressure in the block and one bar in the head."

My 200k mile E36 m3 also had the ticking as well. I ended up putting in 7 litres (just over 7 quarts) last oil change and I haven't heard it since. Our autox pad is really small too so it never really reaches anywhere near redline. There's a few other e36 m3's who show up that have oil baffles/overfills and they rarely get the lifter tick. I was considering the kit you mentioned but decided I don't do enough track days to justify it.

I have an upgraded Achilles Motorsports baffle but still a single oil pick up tube, and my engine ticks after track sessions frequently. Just dump another quart in there before going out and it will happen a lot less. The good news is the lifter ticking isn't really a "problem," it's just annoying.

Rib - nice wet footage! I'm always amazed at the traction in wet conditions! My mind is telling me to slow down, but I feel the grip.

Nate - good to know..... one of the instructors stopped me to say "oh you have the M3 Autocross lifter tick going!"..... I was taken back as my car has never made such a racket! it went away on drive home. Immediately did a quick oil change when I got home, now nice and smooth and quiet!

Did you end up overfilling by a tad or just going with the pickup/baffle mod? If you do please take photos of the process

Default Re: My $8.8K 176K mile Craigslist E36M3 Journey Begins

11.20.17 Update - Every project has a tipping point..... the point at which a large portion of the vision or dream is achieved relative to resources invested........ this week it happened.....

The engine, clutch, suspension, brakes, interior, body all came together.

Engine - The engine was plagued with random CEL's, misfires, low power, random good power episodes, and high oil consumption 1qt /500miles!....

By installing the S50 intake I was able to resolve several other factors.... cleaned fuel injectors, new fuel filter, totally replumbed the PCV system and used hose clamps on all fittings, removed the TC Throttle Body, mounted the AIT sensor in the intake boot for cooler temps...... This motor just sings now from 4000-Redline! There is not intermittant good power, bad power...... I believe the IAT sensor was clogged with oil, the intake was just sucking in oil, and fouling plugs, and killing power, and causing high oil consumption. The S50 intake is working very well with the already installed Dinan Tune + cutback + headers + dinan TB + dinan CAI....... it's all working very well together.

It's too early to tell At only 300 miles since the above fixes..... but I'll keep an eye on oil consumption and report back.

Enjoyed a 180mi roadtrip today and the car performed flawlessly..... 3rd gear pulls awesome! stuck in stop-go traffic for 20 min.... no overheating, no cel.....

could not be happier!
